-Trump is threatening invoking the Insurrection Act in Minneapolis.
-The US is stealing Venezuelan oil, selling it, and sending the money to Qatar for "safekeeping."
-NATO is sending troop to Greenland to defend it from the US.

I don't even know what to say.

When I heard about Trump's plan for 50-year home mortgages, I think I heard Tennessee Ernie Ford's voice singing

"Saint Peter don't you call me, 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store."

TX has a problem with abandoned babies. Maybe instead of posting the 10 Commandments every classroom, they should post instructions on how to surrender a baby safely. They won't instruct kids on how to avoid getting pregnant, but maybe they could do this.

We’re being governed by monsters. Just absolute monsters.
She was brought to the US as an 8yo, worked hard, studied, earned a scholarship, planned to become a nurse.

ICE kidnapped her. Held her for 6 MONTHS in a detention facility with conditions so miserable that she finally agreed to voluntarily move to Honduras, which her family left at gunpoint.

As a former Texas State Rep, let me be clear: LOCKING Rep. Nicole Collier inside the chamber is beyond outrageous.

Forcing elected officials to sign “permission slips” & take police escorts to leave? That’s not procedure. That’s some old Jim Crow playbook.

Just a former historian cruising on the Internet. Decided to read the Texas Declaration of Independence of 1836. Gave me a lot to think about.

It is disheartening that, in a nation that supposedly under the rule of law, this is the headline that has to be written. One would have hoped that judges would rule on the basis of the law, not based on who appointed them. But here we are.

Abbott’s bid to expel the House Democratic leader goes to a court filled with his appointees
The Texas Supreme Court said in 2021 the Constitution allows members to thwart legislation by leaving the state. Abbott wants them to reconsider.

America was indebted to immigration for her settlement and prosperity. That part of America which had encouraged them most had advanced most rapidly in population, agriculture and the arts.

I hope we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of our monied corporations which dare already to challenge our government to a trial by strength, and bid defiance to the laws of our country.

It is not infrequent to hear men declaim loudly upon liberty, who, if we may judge by the whole tenor of their actions, mean nothing else by it but their own liberty - to oppress without control, or the restraint of laws, all who are poorer and weaker than themselves.

Gosh. If only there were an historical analogue we could study to learn about the horrors of rounding people up without due process and sending them to torture camps in other countries.

Paging @nathankalmoe.bsky.social. I take back what I said yesterday. The most important social science idea that most people don't understand is that correlation does not imply causation (despite what the GOP tends to claim).
The only mention of Medicaid in the report is the insinuation that feeding children through SNAP is harming them: "Roughly 60% of SNAP participants received Medicaid in 2019, highlighting the connection between healthcare costs and suboptimal nutritional services."
How Trump’s ‘one, big, beautiful’ tax bill could impact programs for women and children
House Republicans approved a sweeping package early Thursday morning that contained deep cuts to programs assisting low-income Americans, including Medicaid and SNAP food stamp eligibility.

Shutting down Head Start might seem at odds with the administration's pronatalist aims. But they're actually closely aligned. Because moms who can't find/afford childcare often end up leaving the workforce. And once they're home full-time, it often seems reasonable to have more kids.
