Gov. JB Pritzker says Trump is deploying troops to Chicago due to "dementia" and obsessive fixations.

www.chicagotribune.com/2025/10/07/g...
“This is a man who’s suffering dementia,” Pritzker said in a telephone interview with the Tribune. “This is a man who has something stuck in his head. He can’t get it out of his head. He doesn’t read. He doesn’t know anything that’s up to date. It’s just something in the recesses of his brain that is effectuating to have him call out these cities.

“And then, unfortunately, he has the power of the military, the power of the federal government to do his bidding, and that’s what he’s doing.”

Pritzker: “I will not back down. Trump is now calling for the arrest of elected representatives checking his power. What else is left on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?”

Johnson: “This is not the first time Trump has tried to have a Black man unjustly arrested. I’m not going anywhere.”

Trump called for Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson to be jailed — a dramatic rhetorical escalation as he tries to flood the city with federal agents and National Guard troops against the wishes of the local elected officials.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump again suggested invoking the Insurrection Act against Democratic-led cities resisting his Guard deployments, naming Chicago specifically.

The 200-year-old law grants the government authority to deploy the military to suppress rebellion within American borders.

🚨 The Texas National Guard has arrived in the Chicago area.

Tribune journalists saw several military members, dressed in camouflage and carrying long guns, on federal property in the far southwest suburbs this morning. Soldiers could be seen walking in and out of mobile sleeping units on the site.

“We really need leaders who are going to continue to fight, that are going to do everything that we can, not only in the Capitol, under the dome, but also on the streets,” Sen. Karina Villa said.

“Legislators can’t just write laws. We must be showing up.”

As Trump’s federal agents continue raiding homes and businesses and marching on city streets to crack down on illegal immigration, many members of Illinois’ legislative branch — typically confined to the guardrails of government — have shifted into rabble-rouser mode.

In its 69-page filing, Illinois AG Kwame Raoul’s office asked the federal court to find the federalization/deployment of the National Guard unconstitutional.

"It will cause only more unrest, including harming social fabric and community relations."

I’m so struck by this video. A regular day in Logan Square in front of a grocery store and ICE pulls up and tear gassed people. Funston Elementary School is right across the street as well. This is a major corridor in Logan Sq. No concern for human safety
