In Vienna, housing isn’t treated as an investment vehicle or a commodity; it’s recognized as a basic human necessity. Developers still make a profit, but not at the rapid pace they’re pushed to achieve in the U.S.

The problem is nationwide. Compare rents anywhere in the U.S. to cities like Vienna. We have RealPage; they don’t. And they also don’t have the kind of housing crisis we have, largely because the city owns about 40% of all apartments and builds. You see cranes in every neighborhood.

You’re absolutely right. I read that Mandami succeeded by giving young people a shared project and a sense of community - something that’s increasingly hard to find at the local level. Some kind of community center in every district would help.
