I’ve seen mass outrage from fanbases directed at publications/writers because of a several poorly-worded articles lately — but I’ve also seen praise and loyalty for ones with sensitive, respectful and nuanced treatments. 🩷

Actually, small correction because I should have been more specific: martial law was declared in 1979 after a coup by General Chun Doohwan, and the uprising and subsequent killings in 1980 — the topic of Human Acts — were a result of that

I know The Vegetarian is the more ‘popular’ Han Kang book, but after the martial law debacle in South Korea late last year I really wanted to learn more about what happened the last time Martial Law was introduced in SK (the Gwangju student uprising in 1980). Really horrific stuff.

Though unfortunately I wasn’t Fully Concentrating throughout (maybe a crime for an Anderson film I know, sorry) and the ‘play within a movie’-style plot was a little hard to follow because of that, really wish I’d paid more attention 😭
