Both can be great, depending on how they are written. I'll go for whatever kind of ghost the author needs to tell the story. Although the majority of my favorite ghost novels involved ghosts dreamed up by the author.

The Maine woods, although I'm also a huge fan of creepy houses. Woods because you never know what you'll find there. There's a whole junkyards worth of rusted out cars in the woods near my favorite walking trail.
