Yes, they’ll unfortunately be coming for TT faculty too.

Unless you’re a CL Research person they make it almost impossible to do research as part of one’s job. But of course we’re all doing research to teach and some of us want/try to do research on top of that.

So we're finally getting to the 'reading' portion of my Reading Greek Prose class, and I need to highlight to my students how 'reading' is different from 'translating' so they don't come to class with written out translations. What tips would you give a student in this situation?

I know some units do have 4/4 for career-line faculty. I’d be curious what the break down is between teaching and service and research. We’re all lectures in my dept, so all my research is outside my contract. Except, of course, it does inform some of my teaching, just uncompensated.

Ah yes, because we have time to take on more classes. Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Career-line faculty do so much service in my department on top of teaching.

I went onto a podcast to talk about Julian!
diggingupthepast.net
Who was Julian, Rome’s last pagan emperor, and what was his legacy? I talk with MSU #Classics assistant professor and author Jeremy Swist about how history and early Christian writers shaped his story.

Your Sunday homework:

Take 17 minutes and 21 seconds to watch this film made in 1945 by the American government.

Then reflect upon the content of this film, and how it applies to your life and the lives of those people in your communities.

A student in my publishing course is interested in researching book pulping and book recycling. Do we know any work or introductory material in this area?

(Work on remainders, print runs, supply chain, raw materials all relevant, too.)

Day 3: Graiai
#ClassicsTober

Apparently I need to practice drawing people crawling around on the ground. Went over my 10 minute limit on this one because I kept erasing and starting over. 🫤
Three geometric style women crawl around feeling for an eyeball that lies in between them all. They all have empty eye sockets and mouths, except one woman has a single tooth.

NEW—US Department of Education sent out standard Out of Office language to employees on Wednesday in light of shutdown. Later yesterday, workers tell me they found someone had updated their auto-responses without consent to a new one blaming Democrats.

Version of original on left, updated on right:
Thank you for your email. There is a temporary shutdown of the U.S. government due to a lapse in appropriations. I will respond to your message as soon as possible after the temporary shutdown ends. Please visit ED.gov for the latest information on the
Department's operational status.
Thank you. Thank you for contacting me. On September 19, 2025, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 5371, a clean continuing resolution. Unfortunately, Democrat Senators are blocking passage of H.R. 5371 in the Senate which has led to a lapse in appropriations. Due to the lapse in appropriations I am currently in furlough status. I will respond to emails once government functions resume.

#Archaeology is about people.

People like the #Gravettian hunter who, 30,000 years ago in southern Moravia, lost or dropped his pouch containing a well-used tool kit of stone blades and points, (including partially broken pieces he could've let go a lot earlier):
