Mystery Caloplaca on branches of a dead shrub (cf. Sarcobatus vermiculatus) from southern Alberta. Maybe just C. pyracea? No lower cortex. The immersed apothecia are so distinctive and don't look like anything else I collected, except maybe C. saxicola. #prairielichens

Another technical post: My favorite instrument of the day is the acupuncture needle - perfect for picking up fine sections of lichen and manipulating them on the slide.

Dissection pins are mostly useless, fixing pins (for texiles) are too short for me. The larger acupuncture needles are perfect!
