Thank you, @danielnemo.bsky.social & @phebel.bsky.social, for nominating "Market Forces" for the Best of the Net Anthology. I'm a great fan of @amsterdamreview.bsky.social, as well as a grateful recipient of your kindness.

Once the rain let up I was sure
the East River’d have a new tributary
to show for it. Instead, more of the same,

and a new subspecies of kingfisher
last night; I dreamt it, but couldn’t
make out its eyes. It dripped dark green

from a black marsh tree, and it was large, looked
large, even in its large tree. That’s how
you can tell. It might’ve flown

How can there be laughter,
how can there be pleasure, when
the whole world is burning?

I found these words in a book
called Buddha’s Teachings,
translated from the Pali by

Juan Mascaró. It startled me,
at first, by its contemporary
relevance, Gaza in flames

Depeche Mode emerged in the 1980s as unlikely philosophers of the postmodern age. What might at first resemble catchy new wave tunes conceals a profound reaction to Postmodernism and its discontents.

So you take some symbol, like
the overcoat the pockets
an obscure tangle of thread & air
so any weight dropped there went right
to the lining:
             that strange mix
of discretion & batwing billow – no buttons
either, or maybe there once were
 one or two
across the front, the whole thing
angles, panels. This is overexplaining.

Even when I fainted on the dockside
I wanted to do it with grace –
a limp swan folding its wings among reeds.
I remembered my kin who long ago
sailed this way, all plunder and panic.
Who died here on this ragged edge of land.

📚 It's August, which means the #SealeyChallenge is now underway! To help you on your journey to read a book every day this month, The Poetry Society has gotten in touch with poets we've recently worked with for some recommendations. (...)
Fiona Larkin recommends 'alphabet' by Inger Christensen. She says of the book: "Alphabet by Inger Christensen is a rhapsody for the natural world and an urgent call to protect it from human threats. Although those are of its time (the Cold War, and the legacy of the atomic bomb) her message and its urgency ring true even more strongly today."
