My author copies arrived! This is my sixth book and the one of which I am most proud: a sweeping history of the British relationship with opera over the last century.

Available in 🇺🇸 this month, on Kindle immediately, and in 🇬🇧 and Europe in October.

My new article is out in Nineteenth-Century Music Review! ‘Hearing London’s Sailortown in Shanty Repertoire’ explores how 19th-century sailors’ songs reflect the noisy, lively, often precarious world of London’s docklands. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Fear not, it is not about operas by British composers! (I mean, Britten gets a few mentions, but only in passing.)

This book means more to me than any other book I have written. I want to get copies into the hands of everyone who cares about opera or is interested in the broader cultural history of our country.

Please consider buying a copy. Thank you. 🙏

Students can be customers, or they can get a university education.

They can't do both.

Universities are getting away with selling the idea they are research institutions (with associated degree value) after having abandoned research.

Oh no... Disillusioned with the other two main platforms, I was thinking recently about giving it a go!

But then again, on a recent rubbishy BBC game show, participants were played extracts of "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" and they all called it a song. Is it feasible that even young music graduates might be doing similarly? 😱

"Female" as a noun is OK for nature documentaries or police dramas but in every other context is demeaning to women. We aren't animals or criminals.

American usage, as ever, is different.

Female is an adjective and anyone using it as a noun makes themselves sound stupid.

At this event I will be talking to singer Adriana Festeu and Christopher White, Head of Opera at the RAM, about the opera-elitism stereotype and how things differ between Britain and Germany. Free to attend and open to all but you need to book a space.

Please come along and hear me discussing my new book "Someone Else's Music: Opera and the British" at this event at the Royal Academy of Music on 26 September.

My review of the Radical Harmony (aka Pointillist) exhibition at the National Gallery.

Definitely a model to apply to @gwr.com with its endless "points problems between Reading and Paddington" and "too many trains need fixing at the same time" cancellations.

I just thought companies had agreements to avoid all doing the same works in quick succession.
