After two years it is so hard to believe anything. And yet if you care about Israelis and Palestinians having any semblance of a future, there’s no choice but to hope and pray this moves forward.

Two years since we woke up to a nightmare. Two years of war, of unfathomable pain & suffering. Enough. It’s time for the hostages to come home, for the war and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza to end, and for a future of safety & peace for Israelis and Palestinians.
Graphic with a dark background and a single candle flame glowing softly in the center. Text reads:
“Two Years Since October 7, 2023. Two years since we woke up to a nightmare — to the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust. Two years of hostages in captivity. Of war, and of unfathomable pain and suffering. Of extremists exploiting that pain to fuel antisemitism and broader hate around the globe. Enough. It is time for the hostages to come home, for the war to end, for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza to truly be addressed — and for a future in which Israelis and Palestinians can finally live in safety and peace.”

JCPA CEO @amyspitalnick.bsky.social in @jewishinsider.com on how October 7th and its aftermath reinforced false binaries and false choices on antisemitism and Israel - and why it’s now even more urgent to lean into the hard work of coalition building.
Graphic styled as a Jewish Insider article excerpt. Header reads: “How Oct. 7 revolutionized Jewish advocacy.” Below is a headshot of Amy Spitalnick with text: “Amy Spitalnick, CEO of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs.” The quote reads: “Oct. 7 and its aftermath have only reinforced the false binaries and false choices that have long shaped the conversations on antisemitism and Israel. Extreme voices on both ends of the political spectrum have worked overtime to pit the Jewish community against others: those on the right who say we cannot counter antisemitism without undermining our democratic institutions and values, and those on the left who say we cannot be proudly Jewish or connected to Israel while remaining committed to humanitarian and democratic values. All of this makes it even more urgent to lean into the hard work of coalition- and partnership-building across lines of difference, despite it feeling more challenging than ever.” The JCPA (Jewish Council for Public Affairs) logo is at the bottom.

As we near Shabbat and 2 years since the 10/7 attacks, we are closely following this news from the region — and pray we’ll soon see the day the hostages are all home, the war ends, Gazans get the humanitarian relief they need, and Israelis and Palestinians can truly live in peace and dignity.

Our CEO @amyspitalnick.bsky.social in @nytimes.com on how deep polarization on issues like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is being fueled by zero-sum narratives and conspiracy theories amplified on social media.
Graphic with a faded civil rights march in the background and a white text box overlay featuring a New York Times excerpt. Text reads: “How people form views on the Israel-Gaza war has been complicated by influence campaigns, as well as artificial intelligence-generated images and bots that may be pushing one-sided content. ‘There’s a direct link between the rise of polarization on issues like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the ways in which this has been repeatedly reinforced by zero-sum thinking and conspiracy theories on social media,’ said Amy Spitalnick, the chief executive of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs.” The JCPA (Jewish Council for Public Affairs) logo is at the bottom.

This is not happening in a vacuum. Increasingly normalized antisemitic hate leads to real world violence - Tree of Life, the Capital Jewish Museum, Boulder, and sadly so much more. And it threatens not only Jews but all communities and the fabric of our society.

Two people were murdered at a synagogue in Manchester on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year for Jews www.bbc.com/news/live/cx...

We’re facing a global crisis of antisemitism. Too many of us have feared news like this, especially on the High Holidays - it’s felt almost inevitable.

It was a privilege to join Cynthia on the first episode of the Man Up podcast to discuss the inextricable link between misogyny and antisemitism, from the Charlottesville neo-Nazis to 10/7 denial and beyond. Give it a listen then check out Cynthia’s new book on misogyny and violent extremism ⬇️⬇️

Free speech doesn’t only mean speech the government approves. Suppression and retaliation undermine our core democratic norms and values and make all of us less safe.

We are just sitting on a powder keg as the worst possible extremists exploit the Kirk murder to dehumanize, attack, and sow more violence — from the threats against elected officials to inane attempts to make this about the trans community.

This is precisely how political violence works.

We have no idea yet who the shooter was or what motivated them. Those exploiting this horror for political gain - including the president, it appears - are only reinforcing the very dynamics that fuel political violence in the first place. And so the cycle continues.

Rising political violence — including those who exploit it to pit communities against one another — is among the most dire threats to our democracy and our safety.

This is utterly horrifying. And I’m terrified about what may follow.

The normalization of political violence is a threat to everyone's safety. We should all be horrified by this — and make unequivocally clear this violence has no place in our politics or our society.

We’ve partnered on a number of programs & workshops for AFT & affiliate members at their conferences.

And @rweingarten.bsky.social has brought Israeli labor & other leaders to AFT to help advance more nuanced & constructive understanding of the conflict. Among SO much more.

Antisemitism is real - including in our schools. That makes it even more important not to exploit our fears to irresponsibly & inaccurately attack leaders and institutions in pursuit of a broader political agenda.

Here are a few things @rweingarten.bsky.social & I have done on antisemitism:

A funny thing happened today:

Rep. Walberg, Chair of the House Education & Labor Committee, claimed @rweingarten.bsky.social has “not said anything” on antisemitism — while Randi & I were quite literally leading a program on countering antisemitism for @aft.org members, part of a series.

Cutting billions in research funds does nothing to keep Jews - or anyone - safe. It only exploits legitimate concerns about antisemitism to undermine academic institutions and our democracy. This is good news ⬇️⬇️
