New EAT-Lancet warns: food systems breach Planetary Boundaries.

“EAT-Lancet 2025 places justice at the centre, not only as a goal but also as a vital part of enabling transformation,” says Centre Director Line Gordon, one of the report’s lead authors.

The figure shows how much global food systems contribute to pressures on all nine planetary boundaries.

Fresh off the press! A paper in a wonderful volume edited by Peter Adamson @histphilosophy.bsky.social and Miira Tuominen ("Animals in Greek, Arabic, and Latin Philosophy"). This has been the most fun I had in writing a paper, as it combines my favourite topics: Aristotle, animals, and artefacts.

This is sort of like watching a philosophy themed Jerry Springer Show. Quite niche entertainment/horror.

I have to say York’s library is amazing. Completely open to the public. Excellent coffee & salads. Plus I seem to be able to consume the entire environmental philosophy section at my own pace since (1) I’ll never complete my time at the university (being unaffiliated) & (2) no one reads anymore 📚 💙

"Law is both ideal and strategic...If we want to get from here to there, it is straightforward to plot a route if we get clear about the destination. If we start and just want to go to a 'better' place, our course is not clear. Ideal theory directs our practical efforts." - Martha Nussbaum

Getting the feeling that the application of non-ideal theory to pro-vegan & vegetarian food system arguments might just be a more philosophically sophisticated version of: "But bacon." 👀 #philsky

Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring was published OTD in 1962.

“[W]e have now acquired a fateful power to alter and destroy nature. But man is a part of nature, and his war against nature is inevitably a war against himself.”

I am still very much wondering about Charli XCX Dualism. Can you please put me out of my misery before I start googling pop lyrics?

This is from the 'Essential Mary Midgley' volume, edited by David Midgley. I think it's an extract from 'Science and Poetry' - one of her less widely read publications. I remembered it as one of those refreshing straight talking Midgleyean paragraphs 🦉
