Echopraxia does an admirable job of making "you will never know why any of this stuff happened and honestly, you're kind of a jerk for expecting that you would" feel like a reasonable conclusion. Normally I wouldn't put up with that from a book.

Those carts with the big cylinders for flattening out asphalt are probably the most emotionally evocative construction equipment. Or maybe concrete mixers... Fuck, now I'm not sure.

At the end of Sphere (1998) the main character is like "if we couldn't handle these powers then no one could, humanity's not ready" and I'm like buddy, you're a psychiatrist who slept with a patient. Maybe give somebody else a crack at it then we'll make the call.
