Oh I am fully aware. Feels like you could hire at least 15-20 extremely good, national-level, unattached soccer people right now.

Hello! The Guardian is expanding our American soccer coverage. In the US, we're hiring:
• Reporters
• Asst. editor
• Audience editor
• Social video producer
• Sports biz reporter
These are all full-time, permanent, union positions.

The Guardian announces plans to expand its global soccer coverage ahead of 2026 men’s World Cup in North America
Combination of seven new roles, including six in the US, spanning sports and business coverage, visuals, video and more

Interesting Q - I think at the most basic level they’re the same. If I were in charge of a lesson plan I’d probably have everyone write/report at least one story, but a more theoretical approach could be fine too. Important part is just to know more about it.

Same! But we’re definitely among the outliers. Mostly I’m thinking of everyone else in those classes who will never enter a newsroom but now have some notion of how that work is done and why. Really seems like most people just don’t know or care even though it’s, like, foundational to modern society

“But most kids won’t be journalists” yeah, most won’t be mathematicians or historians or athletes or fiction writers and many won’t speak another language fluently yet those topics are required because they’ll probably be present in your life every day no matter what you do. Journalism is the same!

Resolved: Intro to Journalism should be a part of every high school’s core curriculum.

For the WNBPA and the NWSLPA, solidarity is an ethos as well as a strategy. I spoke with leaders from both unions to learn more about the organizations' strong relationship:
The US’s biggest pro women’s sports unions have found strength together
For NWSL and WNBA players’ unions, collective actions have been key to their successes in wholly different sports

This is exactly how I felt when Marcus Mariota passed the ball to himself.

I love that Uefa’s press release announcing their approval of domestic league matches played abroad is headlined “UEFA confirms its opposition to domestic league matches played abroad.”

Absolutely love this, from Luna’s brother. www.theguardian.com/football/202...
“They talk about [Diego] like he’s a street baller. But he never played on the streets. This conception that you only develop the kind of skills he has as a Latino is by playing on the streets, that’s bullshit,” says Armando. “It was all by design. From training. From encouraging his creativity on the field, from discipline. He had to learn the mental aspect of the game quickly. We never criticized him for trying new things. That translates to his game now.”

+1 - totally fine question on a fine topic.

I'm sure a ton of people got to this point a while ago, but I'm officially ready to call 2025 the worst Sporting KC season of all time. 1999 held the title (for me) for a quarter century.

Oh hell yeah. Congrats!!!

Hell yeah, dude. Congrats!

Yeah the champions/winners thing is secondary IMO when it comes to this specific quote. Main Q is if Presidents Trophy is "major"
anabnos.com
Wow I forgot they literally do give out trophies for those. So yeah, another one. Feel like Presidents Trophy is closer to "major," though?
anabnos.com
The key word for me is "major." By world soccer standards, the Presidents trophy probably is major. By North American sports standards, which doesn't even use "major trophy" as a distinction...probably not? I really don't know.
anabnos.com
CBS claims that Nashville SC's Open Cup win is "The first major trophy in the history of Tennessee professional sports."

The Nashville Predators won the NHL's Presidents' Trophy (best regular season record) in 2017-18.

I am NOT a hockey person. How do we feel about this? Is CBS right or not?

It worked

I don’t have a pick for the U.S. Open Cup final but I do have this picture of a mural at a Wall St taco shop that looks an awful lot like Hany Mukhtar.

One of the few things that gives me hope these days is when journalist-led news orgs like @hellgatenyc.com or @defector.com publish their annual reports like this and the numbers are... good. Very good.

If you're a New Yorker, you should subscribe. Right now.

Yesterday, we released our 2025 annual report. There are a *lot* of numbers, but the tl;dr? Hell Gate has been growing! Read the report here: hellgatenyc.com/hell-gate-20...
