There's some really cool research out there. I'm not a professional academic, so it took me a while to get through these studies, but they made me feel very happy about the importance of images and the complexity of our relationship with them. Would love to read your paper if/when available!

Hope it helps you as much as it helped me!

It's not a disclaimer, rather a nuance. Several studies examine the intersection of culture, prior experiences, prototypicality, and other factors that go beyond the initial appearance.

Hopefully, the bibliography gives you some cues (if you read them all, that's the article!)

Yeah it all depends, really! I live in a city with expensive rents, so development costs reflect that here (it's way cheaper to develop colour at home)

I like simple C-41 kits, especially one from Arista with a blix so that I could save space and time developing my colour film.

I also like Rodinal because it works with almost everything, and I don't push my film too often (for that, I found Microphen phenomenal). #photochat

The article addresses this point thoroughly

What I like about the scientific approach is that I can look at evidence of something working, rather than consider opinions and standards set by industry gatekeepers.

And what do you know, some of the best-known "rules" passed down thoughtlessly are ineffective according to one of the studies.

This is a well-lit photo with a good scanner and a wide dynamic range film, best conditions almost. The effect can be significantly more dramatic in other cases

Have a look at the background in the mirror. In the digitally pushed photo the details are gone.

It’s a hack for sure! I thought this could be an idea worth exploring. The end result is visually similar and camera settings are identical. It’s clearly not a chemical process and it can look bad with poor scans but it can still be a learning experience thats a little more accessible.
