It can grind people's gears to point out that the "gift of life" is not inherently a gift. None of us consent to be conceived or born into our mother's circumstances. Bringing a pregnancy to term is not inherently good or kind, any more than we owe parents anything for the life they foisted on us.

Dwarves never got a popular depiction far from Tolkien's. Stout bearded axe wielding miners and for some reason Scottish. They have a narrow appeal to play and are a pain to depict in live action or make sexy.

Newsom has his moments. I may give him excess credit because the recall election was absolute trash. But when he tries to appeal outside California he shows us he either takes bad advice or doesn't take good advice. Our state doesn't prosper by making up problems with trans athletes.

I saw Dodgeball in a double feature with Anchorman. It was obvious which would have the lasting footprint, though Dodgeball did bless us with The Ocho and Rip Torn throwing wrenches. It was fun seeing Ben Stiller go full dirtbag and both films did right by giving us Missi Pyle.

Middle-earth is a setting where humanity awoke fully formed mere thousands of years before Tolkien's tales, as did the Elves and Dwarves. They haven't had a half million years to migrate around the planet and visually differentiate. "Realistically" they would all be dark skinned like we were.

A few years ago I read the 1995 Rogue Squadron series by Dark Horse. Over all 35 issues every pilot that joins up is either a white human or an alien. It was likely unintentional in the 90's, but with modern eyes it's hard not to notice.

Star Wars is such a clear example. The original movie is unintentionally made with only white actors on screen. People of all colors love it. The Force Awakens is released with a Black hero. A predicable set of white people are outraged. The problem isn't with the movie or franchise.

The Iliad's a funny specific since Elon proposed that Rome was founded by Trojan exiles, with oddly confident details about ships landing with warriors and few women, as if this were a new idea and wouldn't require a half millennium time jump and evidence of said ships and warriors.
