It's also insane that police even considered the possibility of bringing charges when Texas law *explicitly exempts* abortion seekers from being prosecuted, but it's not like this fact has stopped law enforcement and prosecutors before:

Woman Charged With Murder After Abortion Sues Prosecutor
The murder charges “irrevocably changed the course of Lizelle Gonzalez’s life,” her attorney says.

What a horror story. Also let this be your semi-regular reminder that most pregnancy criminalization cases involve someone snitching to law enforcement.

But I guess it’s terribly inconvenient to challenge your own understanding of this country. It’s way easier to ignore the harm the U.S. has inflicted on its colonies for over a century and pretend fascism began this year.

Like it’s so funny that this week the main takeaway from Bad Bunny’s politics has been that he is anti-ICE and “woke” while commentators pointedly ignore his anti-colonial and pro-independence views. He has been quite explicit about that, my friends!

“Bad Bunny is more American than the first lady!” “Here’s what Chuck Schumer can learn from Bad Bunny!” “Puerto Rico is the U.S!”

My kingdom for liberals to stop using Puerto Ricans as a rhetorical device and actually engage with the uncomfortable fact that we are colonized subjects.

It's easy to see this speech as just weirdly performative, but there's a lot more—and a lot worse—going on here.

The meeting & speeches are part of a larger project aimed at promoting the military leadership’s partisan alignment with the administration.

yeah they're just murdering random people on these boats

I think the Trump admin assumed no one would try to find out who the people on the boats they blew up really were

I spoke with historian @mark-bray.bsky.social about what’s behind Trump's executive order declaring antifa a “domestic terrorist organization” and his memorandum ordering federal probes into “organized political violence.”

Trump Doesn’t Care if You’re Actually “Antifa”
Have you protested his policies? His administration’s elastic definition of left-wing violence could eventually ensnare you.

Karolina spent years idolizing raw vegan influencers on Instagram. She went to Bali to meet them — and never came home.

My deep dive on fruitarianism — a group of wellness influencers who exclusively eat raw fruit — is up on @nymag.com @thecut.com today. www.thecut.com/article/karo...

The Republican reaction to Kirk’s murder has been a campaign of state repression that ends with Trumpist toadies deciding what Americans are allowed to think, do and say. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...
What happened to Jimmy Kimmel is not about one comedian who said something he should not have said. The Trump administration and its enforcers want to control your speech, your behavior, even your public expressions of mourning. You are not allowed to criticize the president’s associates. You do not even retain the right to remain silent; you must make public expressions of emotions demanded by the administration and its allies or incur its disfavor, which can threaten your livelihood. This is the road to totalitarianism, and it does not end with one man losing his television show.

ICYMI here’s my interview with @qabila.bsky.social:

I spoke with Amanda Heffernan, a nurse-midwife based in Seattle, about what's like to currently work with pregnant migrants in ICE custody. What she has witnessed in Washington state mirrors other recent cases of mistreatment in detention centers across the country:

Heffernan is worried about how pregnant women are vulnerable to a lot of harm as well as how they are not being given bonds, therefore extending their time in custody.

"Maybe this is the beginning of seeing people detained a lot longer in pregnancy," she says.

Two separate reports by Democratic senators Jon Ossoff and Dick Durbin have found cases of pregnant people being unable to access health care, denied adequate meals, and forced to sleep on the floor due to overcrowding.
