Sounds like a very topical conference, particularly since we're seeing a drive towards reducing access to higher education across the West again.

My native-speaker/hobby-germanist take on a current issue (important enough for Chancellor Merz): I always thought #Wurst refers to the shape of the thing rather than what it is made of. I suppose there must be someone somewhere who has conducted etymological research on this important question...

I am absolutely thrilled that Karin Meredith’s dissertation on c19th beauty culture in advertisements has been hightly commended by @womenshistnet.bsky.social. It was perhaps the best diss I’ve ever had the delight to supervise! I’m so proud of her &with @ljmuhistory.bsky.social send hearty congrats

Highly Commended: Karin Meredith

"Marketing Beauty, Maintaining Power: Gender, Class and Advertising in Late Nineteenth-Century Britain"

An insightful exploration of the beauty industry through periodicals, touching on whiteness, femininity, and moral discourse.

I agree. I have been organising and facilitating workshops with local schools for HMD on a regular basis. There is usually a lot of interest, but it often comes from grammar or private schools, which is not inherently a bad thing. But I always wondered how we could reach out more widely.
andrekeil.bsky.social
Might well be. I am a native speaker and have never used it or heard it. It doesn't really matter, since the emotion it describes is quite real.

I am quite upset by the attack on the synagogue in Manchester. It's particularly heinous to target the congregation on one of the most important Jewish holidays. There is nothing that can ever justify this.

I am pretty sure the word "Angstlust" doesn't exist. Never heard it before. The feeling is real, though the word isn't.

“We saw it during Brexit and we see it with the AfD in Germany. Pandering to the far right never works. And yet conservative parties seem to have this - in German we call it ‘Angstlust’ - a desire to go somewhere dangerous.”

I really love @annettedittert.bsky.social's scrupulous, unfussy honesty.

I wrote another book review, as I often do these days. I discuss Marcus Colla's study of #Prussia in the historical culture of the #GDR. I thought it was a very important book for all those interested in the political culture and mentality of East Germans. Key to understanding what's going on now.

More wholesome #gardening content. I finally managed to harvest my #courgettes. One got just really (I mean REALLY) big. Any recommendations for batch-cooking recipes for courgettes are very welcome!

Another (un-)popular view: By all means, use a new British ID card for voter ID checks. If they are free, mandatory, and straightforward to obtain, this will be the best defence against "rigged election" fake news and conspiracy theories. Works well in Germany and many other countries... #JustSaying
andrekeil.bsky.social
BritCard sounds like a dodgy discount card/cashback scheme. UKID sounds better and more official.
andrekeil.bsky.social
I do agree. As an immigrant who arrived in Britain many years ago, I am already constantly under pressure to prove my right to work (even for the smallest of jobs like examining a PhD viva). Having an ID card would make my life a lot easier, save time, and I would feel MORE assured of my rights.
robfordmancs.bsky.social
“A Farage government will use it against immigrants and marginalised groups.” They might, yes, but they might also exploit the *lack* of universal id to persecute such groups (as has already happened in US). Having a universal credential to prove your rights can be a * protectjon* against this.

MRP is usually bullshit. Crystal-ballery with some psopholigical dressings.
andrekeil.bsky.social
What I read here is Starmer saying Reform are right; we dislike Johnny Foreigner just as much as you do; we might find some money to refurbish your local Wetherspoons... otherwise devoid of policy or any unique "selling points" why Labour should be supported.
The Left ignored immigration fears for too long. It’s time to give communities back control
Only a plan for patriotic national renewal led by Labour will counter the rise of the populist Right

(Un)Popular opinion (?): I am all in favour of ID cards. Almost every other country has them, and they are not a gateway to authoritarian rule and fascism. Britain is catching up with the normality of almost any other country by introducing them. As an immigrant, it will make my life much easier.
andrekeil.bsky.social
Oh obviously! No question about that. But that's serious politics; Weber's drilling of thick planks. Electoral politics are now deeply unserious and all about "vibes". That's the essence of our age of populism (depressingly so!)
andrekeil.bsky.social
If Burnham as an Evertonian can win elections in Greater Manchester, he can perhaps also turn Labour's fortunes around. Can't get much worse anyway (it kinda can, but the "vibe" is alreday pretty terrible). Let's see how this plays out.
georgeeaton.bsky.social
Excl: Labour would take a two-point lead over Reform with Andy Burnham as leader, new More In Common polling shows. www.newstatesman.com/politics/lab...
andrekeil.bsky.social
Numbers mean nothing, but they capture a "vibe" if you will. Starmer is unpopular and uncharismatic (without any realistic prospect to change that), while Burnham comes across better. Fred Perry vintage casual fashion combined with a clearer and more "normal" sounding communication probably works.
andrekeil.bsky.social
Totally agree. England's second city (after Liverpool, of course) is a great place to live in and visit. Never felt unsafe when visiting and always enjoyed the bustling energy there.

Ah, great to see the undiluted benefits of hosting the man last week.

Trump to the UN: "I have to say, I look at London where you have a terrible mayor -- terrible terrible mayor -- and it's been so changed, so changed. Now they want to go to Sharia Law ... both their immigration and their suicidal energy ideas will be the death of Western Europe."

I might be a bit late to the party (pun intended), but a happy #ShanaTova to all who celebrate! May the new year bring peace, justice, and goodwill to all.
andrekeil.bsky.social
I am so looking forward to it. 😁

Thanks for being so clear about this. It would be great if the Labour leader would find the moral courage to make a similarly clear statement.
