Corn-fed T&S leader. I used to work at a place that made a place like this place. You have rights; fight fascism; use semicolons; vote.

A small (personal) example of this book’s intellectual dishonesty:

My father-in-law is reading In Covid’s Wake, and excitedly told me he found a passage where I’m quoted. The quote in question is me saying the FBI worked to censor speech on social media.

Huh? When did I say that?!

when your censor is in the house - or is head of it - govt no longer needs to make a direct order. this is proceeding precisely as planned.

Sen. WHITEHOUSE: We finally are moving to file a bipartisan Section 230 repeal bill. Waiting any longer serves no useful purpose.

"Elon’s entire incoherent free speech framework collapses into a single coherent principle: speech I like is protected, speech I don’t like should be punished.

This is what happens when someone who never understood the actual principles of free speech tries to cosplay as a free speech absolutist."
Three Tweets That Capture The Entire Elon Musk Free Speech Con
We’ve spent years calling out what a hypocrite Elon Musk is on free speech. But sometimes the universe Elon hands you a gift: three tweets in the span of a little over a week that demonstrate…

I overcame a year's inertia and finally cancelled last week. Harder and harder to be shocked these days, but this one is mask-off nuts.
You guys have to read the termination letter that @washingtonpost.com sent @karenattiah.bsky.social because they essentially accused her of anti-white racism because she mentioned that Charlie Kirk was a white man 😵‍💫

Then they called her a “risk.”

As a favor to me, if you write about this Administration’s free speech positions, avoid giving them too much credit by calling the “hypocrites.” They were NEVER SINCERE about freedom of speech as a value. It was only occasionally a useful cudgel for them to preserve societal and official power.

Oof. I miss the Durbin who pushed legislation to promote openness and *prevent* platforms from capitulating to repressive governments
Durbin is right. Companies like Meta won't do the right thing unless they are forced to do so

But repealing Section 230 will literally just solidify the monopoly power of Meta by killing off smaller alternatives like Bluesky and Mastodon, while opening the floodgates for censorship. So... wtf man
