One that had a huge effect on me indirectly was Trinity Tourney from 2011. This was 2 years before my time, but everyone else who's in my modern friend circle met here. I was absorbed into the fold after the fact, and participated in it's sequel in 2016

There's a subplot where a side character falls in love with a different AI, and it seems to be reciprocated and the audience is misdirected to think it is different. The subplot ends cynically and grimly as that character dies due to following the AI's nonsense instructions.

We need an "AI takes over the world" story that reflects our modern understanding of what AI is. It's conquering humanity despite not really know what a "human" is, and it's ultimately thwarted because it hallucinates objectives or threats.
