What does the @IPCC_CH AR6 say about GHG emission metrics (GWP, GTP, GWP* etc)? This was covered in an in-session workshop at the June #SB58 subsidiary bodies meeting of the @UNFCCC. A nerdy thread on the findings from WGIII from a mitigation perspective🧵1/26 (re-post from twitter, sorry)

Thanks, up look out for the podcast! If it's of interest, I recently gave a longer overview lecture on overshot for the Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change. youtu.be/TzkoJaLQ8ik

Lecture starts at 8.15 in that recording.
PowerPoint slide showing a graph with several scenarios of rising global warming above 1.5 degrees, and two scenarios where global warming exceeds 1.5 degrees for a few decades but then declines back to or below 1.5 degrees by 2100. Next to this are three 'burning embers' bars from the IPCC 6th Assessment Report that illustrate the increasing risk as global warming increases, for unique and threatened species, extreme weather events, and the distribution of impacts.

"We find no significant difference between the climate strategies of companies that purchased credits and those that did not. [...] Yet, we document that for large-scale offsetters in the airline industry, carbon credit purchases competed with financing internal decarbonisation measures."
The negligible role of carbon offsetting in corporate climate strategies - Nature Communications

"Charlie Kirk gave me the courage to be more transphobic" is a wild thing to put in a both-sides hagiography
www.nytimes.com/2025/09/11/u...
‘He Gave Me Confidence’: How Charlie Kirk Connected With Young Men
With his right-wing group Turning Point USA, Mr. Kirk engaged controversial topics. Some students were inspired. Others found his views appalling.

As a Christian, he did not always feel he could say what he actually thought about the issue.

“It’s kind of scary to say what you believe in, especially in this cancel culture,” said Porter LaFeber, a 22-year-old studying sciences at Utah Valley University who was at an event on Wednesday where Mr. Kirk was killed. “Charlie Kirk seemed like he just went totally above that. He kind of gave a voice to the people that were maybe a little bit scared.”

“He gave me the confidence to be able to believe what I believe,” Mr. LaFeber added.

Even if you don't vote for your council (pls do but), tick that box for the referendum.

It is BINDING for three terms - so if it fails, no Māori ward for nearly a decade.

And EVERYONE votes, not just Māori. Tāngata Tiriti step up, Pākehā mā, you need to vote.

We'll cross global warming of 1.5°C in the next 5 years or so - what then?

I'll explore the challenges and choices we're facing with climate overshoot in a lecture on 18 September for the Centro Euro-Mediterranneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici

An in a simplistic interpretation, a company that has negative emissions is owed a reward (like people planting trees), whereas a company that has positive emissions has to pay a price for its emissions. Agree the problem is not GWP* as such, but misinterpretation what those numbers mean for policy.
andyreisinger.bsky.social
The issue is that in a simplistic interpretation of the numbers that GWP* provides, a factory that drops its historically high emissions will report negative emissions based on GWP*, whereas the same factory will still report positive emissions using GWP.

It's outstanding that this clear presentation is part of Germany's public broadcaster's daily weather forecast. Long may the stamina last not only of @terliwetter.bsky.social (thank you!) but also those in charge of the @heuteshow.de that enable him to provide this essential public service.

🧵THREAD on agri-methane and ‘no additional warming’

Why is it so important to reduce methane (CH4) emissions from agriculture in the near term?

What happens when countries like #Ireland use ‘no additional warming’ to set climate targets?

PAPER: iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1...

(1/18)
Screen grab of paper title, published in Environmental Research Letters, 12 August 2025. Title reads: National temperature neutrality, agricultural methane emissions and climate policy: reinforcing inequality in the global food system. Duffy et al 2025.
andyreisinger.bsky.social
With a stark graphic: far from alleviating global hunger, animal-sourced food products produced by high and upper-middle income countries predominantly go to other wealthy countries, with less than 6% of total animal food production by those countries reaching low and lower-middle income countries.
A Sankey diagram showing the types and destinations of animal sourced foods produced by high and upper-middle income countries. 70.94% go to high income countries, another 23.32% go to upper-middle income countries, 4.93% go to lower-middle income countries, and 0.81% go to low income countries (all percentages based on trade value). Over 47% reside in low and lower-middle income countries.
