I had this photo pinned to the top of my Twitter feed for four years because whenever I look at it I remember happier times. Those memories grow more precious to me with every passing day.

Sticking with car dependence is a failure of imagination, particularly when the wide range of benefits of ending car dependence is so clear.

“In a city once choked with cars and infamous for its traffic snarls, Paris has pulled off a remarkable turnaround…the French capital has officially become Europe’s best city for children to walk, cycle, and move around independently.” Via @momentummag.bsky.social

When you really start to consider all the dams, levels, dredging, and other projects in the region, the environmental impact of facilitating shipping on the Columbia River is truly horrifying.

New stone planter I built this afternoon - too bad I picked the wrong spot, and now need to disassemble it and move it 5 feet back!

What will it take for regular people to understand that if they refuse to stand up against fascism they will not be spared? Fascism is a serial killer with no restrictions on who it targets.

This is the landscape which the Corps of Engineers will drown if they proceed with their plan to raise the spillway of the Toutle River Sediment Retention Structure. A vibrant ecosystem will be destroyed.

This project must be stopped.

Raising the height of the sediment retention structure spillway on the Toutle River would devastate a vibrant, recovering ecosystem. This project must be stopped.

Write to your elected representatives and the corps of engineers and ask them to halt the project and find better solutions.
Debate over future of sediment management from 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption

It's pretty obvious that Trump's goal is to goad people into a violent response so he can then justify invoking martial law.

Naked bike rides, pajama brunch protests, & people in silly costumes are the proper response. Right now, the key is to expose the regime for the malicious nazis they are.

Today's bonsai work - a Eichholz Cotoneaster.

Very difficult to shape due to the brittleness of the branches, but I really like how this one is coming along after trimming and a little wire shaping!

It's actually just a post I made in a FB group.

Shame on you @daveupthegrovecpl.bsky.social for bringing forward and voting in favor of timber sales today which willd clearcut legacy forests containing old growth trees on our #publiclands.

You were supposed to protect these places.
Instead you chose to betray us.

I want to keep some open grassland as well, for the sake of hawks and owls.

This field on the hillside is slowly regenerating after animals were excluded from it a few years back. I am working to turn it into a pocket meadow, with foret on 3 sides and will plant thickets of native rose and current on the edges of that forest and in its center.

I intend to leave quite a lot of open space, and possibly deepen/widen slightly the ponds for the sake of waterfowl - the ducks need at least one place to land where they won't be shot at!

Birds love this marsh in the spring, but native shrubs which you would expect to find are slow to return. A few ash trees and other species have gained a foothold, but I intend to speed things up with some spirea and willow, possibly aspen as well. (My land end at the fence line in the middle).
andyzahn.bsky.social
Also in the marshy areas, willow trees, which I'm in the process of propogating.
andyzahn.bsky.social
While I have more trees to plant on the farm, I'm going to be focused on planting native shrubs going forward - I want to transform one upper field into meadow with Nootka rose, wild rose, and flowering current. In the marshy area I will plant Douglas spirea.
