Spent five years in Paris, left 15 or so years ago. The photographs Brent posts of Paris are astonishing and hopeful.

Gritty, grey side streets for cars are now green and lively with people. Bicycle lanes on rue de Rivoli?? The only time I saw bicycles on it was the finish of the Tour de France.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

Thanks for the concise summary. Let’s keep pushing for these values—in our everyday encounters and within our professional publics. We have to cut through the hyperbole.

It’s not “partisan” to defend science, evidence, and objective reality.

It’s partisan to attack science, evidence, and objective reality, to benefit your political “team.”

That’s true with climate science, with vaccinology, & with evidence-based city-building, all of which are being attacked.

Reuters photographer Jonathan Ernst noticed that Bondi flipped open a file during the Senate hearing and he zoomed in.

Inside were her crib notes for attacking the senators.

The GOP now practicing Cliff's Notes Fascism

In other words, under oath Bondi was purely a performance.

Speed safety cameras are astonishingly successful. We know the tools that reduce traffic violence. Legalize them.

Just have to take a beat to say that the people that have long warned about state violence and the militarization of law enforcement were right.

I have yet to see a study showing otherwise. Brilliant

For every €1 provided through a Basic Income For Artists pilot program in Ireland, the government got €1.46 back. So it’s being made permanent.

Over and over we see it. It saves public money to provide public housing. And it makes public money to provide basic income.

We can’t afford to NOT do it.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:

Just watched a smart, persuasive interview with @michaelemann.bsky.social & @peterhotezmdphd.bsky.social on US media.

They were asked if “naming names” about liars & their motivations risks coming across as “partisan.”

I think about that a lot as I do similar things in the city-building arena. 1/2

Paris is an example of a city who took things seriously and started making changes immediately. Doing targeted changes quickly and cheaply. Then going in and upgrading areas which needed improvements to handle the changes which emerged

Trump’s illegal tariff war (intended to fund tax breaks for the rich) is devastating US farmers, destroying long-term trade relationships between US farmers & buyers.

Now Trump is talking about a “bail out” for farmers (socialism), but is emphasizing agricultural corporations (corporate welfare).

BREAKING: Bill Nye says Trump’s NASA budget cuts are “extinction-level.”

The White House wants to slash science missions by up to 47% — gutting Earth monitoring, planetary research, even live missions to Mars.
Nye warns: this will cripple U.S. space leadership. EU and China will take over.
