8 cases illustrate my rhetorical approach: the Bush admin's contestation of torture prohibition, Iraq and Afghanistan interventions, 2011 Libya no-fly zone, South China Sea dispute, 1267 sanctions regime & Ombudsperson mechanism, and contestation over statehood recognitions (6)

The book discusses whose reactions to norm interpretations count: we need to disaggregate the 'interpretive community' more. In-group and domestic audience reactions to norm interpretations are particularly decisive for whether (powerful) states can uphold them (ch 2, cases). (5)

Chapter 2 & 5 discuss norm interpretations of agents (e.g.courts): agents can manage contestation when they can legitimate their work through their output and identity, but indirect costs of delegation for states (e.g. resources needed for collaboration) can cause instability (4)

The Intro & Chapter 1 (Section 6) explain how my framework & “alternate endings” typology relate to other theories on how contestation affects norm strength, e.g. that despite differences in our norm understandings, my approach can be combined with Deitelhoff and Zimmermann’s (3)
