Gaza | The scale of human suffering and the stripping of human dignity have long exceeded every acceptable standard, both legal and moral.

This tragedy must end now.

Mirjana Spoljaric, ICRC President: ms.spr.ly/63327sGyPt
"There is no excuse for what’s happening in Gaza.

This tragedy must end now, immediately and decisively.

Every political hesitation, every attempt at justification of the horrors being committed under international watch, will forever be judged as a collective failure to preserve humanity in war.”

8 cases illustrate my rhetorical approach: the Bush admin's contestation of torture prohibition, Iraq and Afghanistan interventions, 2011 Libya no-fly zone, South China Sea dispute, 1267 sanctions regime & Ombudsperson mechanism, and contestation over statehood recognitions (6)
anettestimmer.bsky.social
The book discusses whose reactions to norm interpretations count: we need to disaggregate the 'interpretive community' more. In-group and domestic audience reactions to norm interpretations are particularly decisive for whether (powerful) states can uphold them (ch 2, cases). (5)
anettestimmer.bsky.social
Chapter 2 & 5 discuss norm interpretations of agents (e.g.courts): agents can manage contestation when they can legitimate their work through their output and identity, but indirect costs of delegation for states (e.g. resources needed for collaboration) can cause instability (4)
anettestimmer.bsky.social
The Intro & Chapter 1 (Section 6) explain how my framework & “alternate endings” typology relate to other theories on how contestation affects norm strength, e.g. that despite differences in our norm understandings, my approach can be combined with Deitelhoff and Zimmermann’s (3)
anettestimmer.bsky.social
Here are some pointers on what sections might be relevant to those interested in norm contestation and strength, international organizations and courts, the interpretive community and empirical cases. You can find a concise summary of my argument on pp. 6-19. (2)

"when it came to Gaza, Mr. Trump’s thinking on Tuesday was so far outside the box that it was not clear he even knew there was a box." That precisely is one of the biggest problems for the world - the complete ignorance of international law.
An Unbound Trump Pushes an Improbable Plan for Gaza
Once a critic of nation building, the president now envisions taking over a Middle East enclave, driving out its Palestinian population and transforming it into “the Riviera of the Middle East.”

In #Germany, a watershed moment: Just hours after commemorating the Holocaust, the centre-right has accepted the support of the #farright #AfD to pass a (largely symbolic) motion against immigration, tearing a massive hole into the so-called 'firewall', Germany's variety of the cordon sanitaire.

Thanks for sharing, Antje! Interesting read with good arguments for why it is worth trying to preserve multilateralism and the liberal order
