Just as we move into severe weather season, the National Weather Service announces it will no longer send up weather balloons out of its Omaha office due to staffing issues.

Today is Winnie the Pooh day and this is my favorite student note ever, with the hand-drawn Winnie the Pooh and note that Winnie the Pooh is the best. #reading #literacy #winniethepooh

Ask and ye shall receive! A third-grade student requested I Survived graphic novels. Of course, we provided those, alongside other survival tales (with a bit of fun alongside!). Kids want to #read, especially #history and #biographies, providing essential background knowledge supporting #literacy.

It's #GivingTuesday. Give the gift of books and support your local literacy organization(s). Books power imaginations and bring joy; however, when over half of low-income children do not have access to books, support for literacy is needed more than ever.

Kids want to read, but not all students have access to a wide variety of books to read that are high-quality, interesting (to them!), and titles will change as they grow. Our nonprofit will circulate over 400,000 books this school year; the most popular category? Nonfiction because it's "fun!".
This matches up with my own experiences working with kids. It's less that they can't read and more that A) they don't want to and B) their reading comprehension is lower.

I feel like the solution really is showing kids that reading is fun again rather than just work.

America’s literacy crisis isn’t what you think
This is what happens when kids don’t read for pleasure anymore.

I am the CEO of a book access nonprofit in Nebraska that will circulate over 400,000 books this school year for students that otherwise don't have access to books. At my daughter's book fair this week, I had a stark reminder why my org exists. Five books for $58. 1/

Trying to break out of my introvert tendencies. Expect posts on books, a bit of politics, and whatever may be on my mind.
