A plant-based food system would not entail the destruction of lakes and biodiversity 🌱🌱

How many lakes must die before we stop putting the demands of animal farming before the preservation of nature?
animalrebelsire.bsky.social
‘Cllr Morris said he understood under the EU nitrates directive farmers were allowed discharge liquid wastes into the lake in advance of an October deadline, which meant “there was a perfect storm of conditions” for the bloom to occur.’

Contact the DAFM [email protected] and let the Minister know that this is not OK.
You can also contact @irishferries.bsky.social and @brittanyferries.bsky.social who are transporting these poor animals:

This very short video by @ethicalfarmie.bsky.social clearly shows the horrors of #LiveExport. Young Irish bulls are still being subjected to this and even shipped outside the EU where the EU 'protections' don't apply.
This needs to end now!

This decision by the EU shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that has been paying attention to water quality.

What should come as a surprise is that to date the Government has no contingency plan in place for any loss or major revision of the derogation.

The ongoing erosion of environmental ambition in the EU must stop. I call on Members of the European Parliament to reject any attempt to weaken the EU Deforestation Regulation

Nitrate pollution in Ireland

An Taisce's Head of Advocacy, Dr Elaine McGoff: 'Half of our lakes and two-thirds of our estuaries are polluted ... time for the Government to step up and put in place a well-thought through and adequately resourced plan’

Apparently, according to IFA on Morning Ireland just now, it’s an “Armageddon scenario” for agri sector if its licence to pollute, aka the Nitrates Derogation, is withdrawn.

This is despite fact that EVERY other country in EU has scrapped this hugely damaging derogation.

If trees had funerals...

Livestock farming is a leading cause of deforestation. This is due to the fact that vast amounts of land are required to keep animals and grow their feed. It is thought that animal agriculture is responsible for around 91 percent of Amazon destruction.

Government intention to scale back its commitment to stand alone marine protection legislation, in favour of amending existing offshore energy legislation, is a worrying development in the protection of Ireland’s seas.

I'm just learning that the government is planning to drop its commitment for a Marine Protected Area Act and I'm disgusted. Anyone who made a submission to the public consultation on this a few years ago should be too. I have been ringing my local politicians (especially FFG) to express my feelings!

None of the people writing above would ever promote livestock intensification. All of them maintain that the most sustainable farmers are the ones growing crops for people to eat, not to feed to animals. See Joseph Poore's advice about the best thing you can do for the climate: adopt a vegan diet.
animalrebelsire.bsky.social
Disappointing to see the emphasis here on continuing to incentivise animal agriculture, now under the guise of 'extensive' as opposed to 'intensive' farming. Where is the place for much-needed #rewilding and a #plantbasedfoodsystem?
