Lady's Island lake is the end result of decades of agricultural nitrogen water pollution.

The only way we can turn the agricultural nitrogen pollution problem around is if those in power admit that their measures aren't working.

It's time to actually listen to the evidence, not the spin.

SWAN member, @antaisce.bsky.social, had their Head of Advocacy @elainemcgoff.bsky.social on Primetime last night talking about the pollution crisis in Lady's Island Lake.

This, while shocking, could be fixed so quickly. It's simply not good enough, and our waterways are paying the price.

'over 40% of these failures were avoidable, caused by poor plant operation, equipment breakdowns, and inadequate maintenance, training, or procedures'

I would say that horse has long since bolted. Coconut milk? Google tells me that's been in use as a term since 1698. Soy milk has been in use since 1897. Consumers know the difference, it's not that hard to differentiate.

It's all just a distraction while the world burns.

It's worth registering your displeasure on this here, in case politicians take some mad notion to actually represent what the public want or care about:

Once again, this assault on environmental safeguards is being sold as “simplification.” It’s not simplification, it’s dismantling. And it’s a betrayal of both nature and farmers.

This is honestly the stupidest thing I've heard in a long time- banning the use of the words burger & sausage on plant based products.

The world is burning & war ravaged, & this is what our Parliamentarians think they need to 'fix'?

P.S. Fish also don't have fingers, right @oisinc.bsky.social?

It’s a "crisis" when immigrants "take jobs away", but "innovation" when machines do. Funny.

The EU frogmarched into ridicule by the intensive farm lobby. The European Parliament has voted through the Veggie burgers ban.

As the world burns, we make symbolic gestures to show we want to burn it faster.

One bright spot in a dull budget 2026 for the environment – the 20% increase in funding for the National Parks and Wildlife Service, including a 27% uplift in capital investment in Ireland’s National Parks and Nature Reserves and its Natura sites is much-needed and welcome.

It'd need to be a more long term than a LIFE project, but that might be a good start. And a lot of the FHT work would be looking at rarer species which tend to occur in smaller clean waters, so possibly not the most suitable for citizen science.

I would say we don't have that information in Ireland, @freshwaterhabitats.bsky.social have been doing amazing work for decades identifying and protecting these smaller UK waterbodies, along with creating new ones. We're seriously lagging behind here in that regard, and we've drained a lot of them.

The EPA clarified during the session that they have never suspended a licence to date, and North Cork Creameries is not the only entity in Ireland with a questionable IPC compliance record.

We're on the streets of Brussels to say #HandsOffNature as the EC pushes through a serious of "omnibus" laws designed to destroy decades of good laws that protect nature and people.

Later we will hand @jessikaroswall.ec.europa.eu 200k signatures of citizens who responded to her consultation

Deputy Whitmore asking the question we all want to know the answer to.

Although they didn't say it, it seems the answer to the question about when the EPA pull the plug on a non-compliant discharge licence is never. They never have to date.

Polluters can do their thing and still get licenced.

How many chances should be given to get it right?

Non-compliance under our licence system appears to be more the norm than the aberration when it comes to protecting our water quality
