As someone who has played Pokémon since I was a kid (starting with Red), if I hadn't grown up with them, I'd be very reluctant to have started playing them when I was older because of the "fan" culture surrounding the games
Every Pokemon game made after Crystal was "the bad one" actually and it's something I have to remind myself as I see people younger than me say Pokemon games weren't disliked until the Switch.
