New paper out in #openaccess on role of infrastructure in territorial stigmatisation Available here: www.ijurr.org/article/infr...

The stigmas faced by labour migrants in Indian cities gained global attention during the Covid-19 response. This paper shows how such stigmas are long-standing, reinforced and represented through the very urban infrastructures migrants help build

Fantastic new paper from @nabmed.bsky.social on 'INFRASTRUCTURE AS TERRITORIAL STIGMA: Labour Migrant Exclusions in the Indian City'

In what ways does infrastructure fuel, but also substantially reshape, forms of territorial stigmatization?

Read this to find out! 👇

Interested in the role of urban infrastructures in territorial stigma? In IJURR's @ijurresearch.bsky.social latest online issue I draw on case of labour migrants to argue how spatial + social 'taint' interlock in complex, competing ways in Indian cities #urban #infrastructure #migrants #labour
INFRASTRUCTURE AS TERRITORIAL STIGMA: Labour Migrant Exclusions in the Indian City
The city as an exclusionary place for migrants is widely established across global literatures. Global cities—and the infrastructures that animate them—share practices of surveillance and bordering, ...

@sheffielduni.bsky.social #Geography and #planning I teach on a module called Environmental Justice at a time of crisis. Today we designed student cafe spaces with #lego. There were circular economies, sharing spaces, accessibility and transport links, and an energy producing dance floor with a DJ.

This was such a fun activity. Great to hear laughter and talk as the students designed their spaces. It can be heavy and grim talking about justice and crisis. @ankitkumar.bsky.social also teaches on this module.

My mother in law got us a bag full of spice and other mixes from Trader Joe's this summer. Coz thats what one gifts from US

You are right. It might not be the whole picture. Still, institutions want to make moral claims on these sorts of things but not change institutional spaces and practices
ankitkumar.bsky.social
This is a huge showdown! I am all for flying less but highly entrenched institutional practices of time, energy & money need to change. Ideally, this scientist doesn't even need to travel. Also, let's not forget, common but differential responsibilities

📢📢📢 BREAKING: Press release from climate scientist Dr Gianluca Grimalda, who has been told he will be fired from Kiel Institute unless he flies back to Germany from his research field work. He refuses to fly in order to reduce climate harm: the topic of his research.

Yes, agree with this. As a social scientist working on climate change and society, it can be frustrating to see so little understanding of the role social science can play here. Not all scientists are the same and no one scientist is an expert on everything.
