Hi new followers! I work on medieval literature, fanfiction, the history of reading and rewriting, adaptation, reception, medievalism, and queer theory. I'm currently writing a book about medieval writers who were fannish and their modern fandoms. #medievalsky

Calling English a 'rip-off degree' is one of the most blatant exhibitions of personal barbarism I've ever seen. You've demonstrated nothing but the poverty of your own mind.

Love: A RaceB4Race Symposium is now open for registration!

What does it mean to love in a time of turmoil, and what can the premodern world teach us about this? How do we negotiate loving a being, a nation, a profession that fails to love us back?

(Which book are you talking about?)
annapwilson.bsky.social
Yes!! It works so often! "I visited my father's plantation and married a woman in whose blood the taint of madness ran!" ... "no indeed, I was basely deceived by her family"
annapwilson.bsky.social
Sorry, obviously that should have been tagged #pamela
annapwilson.bsky.social
"The innkeeper's daughter I seduced was so affected by her childbed agonies that she has taken passage on a ship and left our child in my care!"
"Jamaica?"
Etc
annapwilson.bsky.social
Ooh, where did he write about it?
annapwilson.bsky.social
#Pamela I don't know why more novels don't have their characters frequently request to read the novel they are in and then say how good it is, how wise, how likely to be on the NYT bestseller list, etc
annapwilson.bsky.social
#Pamela oh good, now we're being treated to a lecture by the rapist about the correct times to eat meals.

#Pamela this book's attitude to marriage is so inconsistent and bizarre. I don't know why this shocked me the most so far, but Pamela agreeing that Mr B should "give Mrs Jewkes to John" and mandate between his servants a clearly unsuitable marriage really got me. It's so immoral and heartless.
annapwilson.bsky.social
Wow! I don't think I've ever had that happen!

I just rewatched it and it's still so good. I forgot that the top of his scepter is a radio...

What's really interesting me here is how visibly Pamela is the ancestor of Jane Eyre. The latter is a much better book in so many ways but a lot of its essential elements are already in Pamela.

Pamela update: volume 2 makes the bold choice to have zero action and to spend pages and pages of Pamela and B harping on about her condition, virtue, clothes, and wedding date, while occasionally a Foreboding appears. It's so boring, but the hope remains that something bad will happen.

Do you often have mothers visit the class?!
annapwilson.bsky.social
That always used to make me laugh so much, I don't know why it isn't as famous as some of their others, except I suppose it's more niche humor.

I'm now reading Pamela with a sort of queasy horror. Mr B just read her poem about being imprisoned by him to the ladies in their company to great applause.
