For the evening friends.

It's true: I wrote a book. And what's more, the book is done and soon you'll be able to own a copy. And what's more more, if you want a hard copy you can order one for 50% off now, with the code SAR50. And if you want it digitally, it'll be open access!

Ah, got you. It should work, yes. And there will soon be a new website to order direct. Unfortunately release is coinciding with a change in ARC’s EU partnerships (caused by the closure of Amsterdam University Press).

Press is working on it!

Hi V: this might be my bad, do you mind trying it in lower case? If that doesn't work, I'll check in with the press. It should be up and running, but it might have gotten lost in the shuffle.

Then I'll be in person for my book launch at Binghamton University on November 5th (what up, NY State?); and online again with @medievalacademy.bsky.social on December 5th (more details to follow).

Getting to OA status has been a labor of love on the part of my editor, Anna Henderson, and myself. We are indebted to UGA and to the Medieval Academy of America. I am really proud that this book will be widely accessible, as is its mandate.

Extra bonus content: Sarah Waters’ 1995 PhD thesis (QMUL) is now online—pre-writing about queer historical fictions before writing queer historical fiction to reflect on writing about.

I’m not sure it quite fits the bill, but there’s a couple of interesting articles about historical fiction and the work that it does: one is by Hilary Mantel and the other is by Sarah Waters and someone else (the enshitification of the internet has hidden it from me).

Dental x-Ray field of view too tiny to ID the text on a sheet like this. But well remembered!!

There’s also a new paper out in sensors: Paoloni et al., “Thermal Reading of Texts Buried in Historical Bookbindings”
jdsargan.bsky.social
@matthewsteggle.bsky.social is yours also an intact limp wrapper? I was using CT to look at fragments inside bindings, but for a wrapper you might do well with less intensive tech. X-ray could work if it’s a printed book. You might even do well with XRF or multispectral if the writing is outside.

Thanks! Was going to email you when I got a chance.

We have a small budget to make a start on gathering resources for a Book Lab: does anyone have any recommendations, either for materials we should be buying, or for resources that give advice on doing such a thing?

I'm sorry, worldwide, irrevocable, non-exclusive, transferable permission to my voice and likeness? For what now? In any manner for any purpose???

This is in academia/.edu's new ToS, which you're prompted to agree to on login. Anyway I'll be jumping ship. You can find my stuff at hcommons.org.

Will you share a pattern for this wondrous creation when it’s done?

Someone I know (who is now in a great job and who shall also remain nameless), when they were on the market, sent out several letters that referred to their “pubic outreach” before they caught the error.

We have a print shop in Athens called Satisfactory Printing. I feel like these businesses are giving the same energy.
