Normalizing alcoholism in the workplace and everyday life is harmful for everyone. In Korean society it's just accepted to an extend that it is no longer useful in any way. It harms people. Not relaxing, but forcing them into intoxication and ruining their body. So... alcohol, right?

Which sucks. But is part of their life.

want to relax and watch a K-drama they are being confronted with it AGAIN. And in these K-dramas drinking alcohol is then also glorified to an extreme extent.

So the simple answer is: Yes. Pop has a vast big-buffet problem with cultural appropriation. It's a problem because no one really notices or particulary cares. Why? Because it would be uneasy to challenge the white dominance and privilage in pop-culture.

Or as the following article says: "What, for white pop stars, is “fun and appreciation” can, for black people, be the difference between being killed for existing or living another day"
December 2, 2025 at 3:10 AM
White pop-stars seem to be lacking the understanding that just because they have privilege does not mean that they can go ahead and do and use whatever cultural element they want. The ignore the history and still very real racist society they live in.

As much as Hip-hop originated from America, it is especially white Pop-stars from America who do not seem to get the concept of cultural appropriation in return - looking at you Taylor Swift and Katy Perry.

However the rising popularity of BL is a good way to introduce more people to queer spaces, even if just a little bit and even if it is by big companies.

It is nice to think about how this could further develop and change a lot of people's mind but personally I doubt that it is this easy.

The article even goes so far as to say that by showing the stories of these characters it promotes empathy, understanding, and acceptance while challenging stereotypes and opening discussions about LGBTQ+, "fostering a society that values inclusivity and diversity."
November 27, 2025 at 3:15 AM
This article seems to think so.
"It is important to recognize that while some Asian societies remain conservative when it comes to homosexuality, the rise of BL dramas may very well serve as a catalyst for change", with younger generations especially.

The rising popularity of BL and related content makes the impression that companies have realised these advantages of catering their products towards the LGBTQ+ community.
Can this lead to a change in society's perception?
