Unprecedented scenes for #Conwy estuary WeBS count: no wind, rain or swell, resulting in a remarkable 64 Eider (previous best was 10!).

Good counts of Sanderling and Dunlin but Oystercatcher and Turnstone continue to be 50% and 75% down on typical number of recent years.

Shelducks returning too.

The previous largest single day count of Cory's Shearwater in Wales was 50 in 2024, and at the time that was exceptional.

In fact, 313 on 23 October 2025 more than doubled the total seen around the whole Welsh coast ever... (227 to the end of 2024).

The previous largest count of Great Shearwaters in Wales on a single day was 25 in 2002.

In fact, 1623 on 24 October 2025 was five times more than the total seen around the whole Welsh coast ever... (329+ to the end of 2024).

Feather colour, important in signalling, camouflage and mate choice, is largely deter-mined by melanin pigments. Until now, little was known about the mass these pigments add or their potential energetic cost.
