there's some more to do here in the repo to get it where i want, but will probably write a leaflet soon on making moderation work for people that are not Bluesky PBC. hoping that this will be a good step in that direction.

Trying to think of who’s already in the user-facing, serving business…SFC might be with things like etherpad? This would be much more visible obviously, but it’s a thought?

A bunch of the mid-2000s community cloud projects came to mind when I read this, but I think they’re all wound down

One idea would be finding a group who already has multi-party infrastructure up that looks similar to what you’d need, and putting funds towards increasing their capacity.

Having been a part of shared infra projects before, load balancing across donated resources is *not* the fun part :)

On the governance side, a common solution to get something started is using a “nonprofit fiscal sponsor.” They’re essentially your parent company that holds the liability.

I’d like to think I’m scam-aware, but if someone put Moto Guzzi parts at the end of the phishing line…it’s a vulnerable time out there in motorsports land.

It'd be nice if everyone can just play their role in the system! It doesn't work if the user <--> developer loop isn't closed!

"Honor system" answers it :) The overhead I was thinking of was coming from firmer enforcement

Interesting! Did you have to build something custom to track GitHub handle corporate affiliation and their sponsor status, or you were able to tie this into an existing CLA?

My co-author for all correspondence. He lacks opposable thumbs and grammar skills, but he makes up for it in unbridled enthusiasm.

It’s an interesting statement, but the overhead to manage and enforce this is also quite a bit of maintainer time. I have to wonder if that’s worth it compared to what you might get with the occasional, candid call-for-support (thinking about Babel’s blog post that spurred sustained donations)
