🌲 Boreal-tundra species drive Arctic plant borealization 🌲

Our new study in #EcologyLetters quantifies tundra plant borealization, assesses its main drivers and identifies the species & traits contributing to borealization.

Herbarium specimens reveal drivers of Arctic shrub growth @newphyt.bsky.social

Shrub specimens can be used to recreate annual growth chronologies and help understand plant responses to global change.

🌸Plant diversity dynamics over space and time in a warming Arctic 🌸

Our new study @nature.com analysed plant diversity change in >2000 tundra plots over 4 decades. We found that plants changed unevenly, mostly driven by warming and biotic interactions.

For the polyploid fans AND the pollinator fans out there, some thoughts on polyploid establishment 🐝🪰🌿🌱

📢 Viewpoint in New Phyt. on polyploid establishment!
Key take-homes🧵
1. In contrast to earlier hypotheses that pollinators can help new polyploids establish, we suggest that pollinators mainly prevent polyploid establishment because outcrossing increases the strength of minority cytotype exclusion.

I've put together this Starter Pack because I still miss connecting with many Arctic colleagues on this platform. Apologies if I missed adding some of you, but you're all welcome to join!

I completely agree on the magic of a hot beverage! Even better if freshly made. A cup of soup also sounds like a great idea.

🎄 Advent calendar for plant enthusiasts!

With @vercakalnikova.bsky.social, we have gone through our photo archives and, quite unsurprisingly, found many alpine plants there. From now on, at least until Christmas, we will introduce one alpine plant species a day in this 🧵

65 years ago, on 1/12/59, 12 countries (now 67) signed the Antarctic Treaty, declaring that "Antarctica shall be used for peaceful purposes only". Despite being a sanctuary devoted to science, global change is threatening Antarctic ecosystems, and the situation is even worst at the Arctic. (1/2)

Let me guess, you have another new project idea 😉

We came out of the #CBD #nature #COP16 with way too much still to be done. As we are now going into #UNFCCC #climate #COP29, this read offers a great overview over the state of affairs, things at stake, and opportunities going forward tackling the two global crises.
