📊 We find that the ratio of how much glaciated areas melt versus how much accumulation they receive is a good predictor for how important solid ice discharge as a freshwater source is in a region.

🌨️ Before the melt season, seasonal snow melt can actually be the largest source of freshwater.

🧊 In the northwest and southeast of Greenland, solid ice discharge (e.g., calving icebergs) is the biggest contributor throughout the year.
Seasonal and interannual variability in freshwater sources for Greenland's fjords
Abstract. The magnitude, source, release location, and timing of freshwater that ends up in the numerous Greenland fjords is of special interest for ice–ocean interactions and ecosystems. In this stud...

🔬 In our research, we quantified and analyzed where the freshwater components entering fjords come from.

❄️ We find that in June-August, meltwater runoff from the ice sheet is the most important source of freshwater in Greenland's fjords (with regional differences).

🌊 Freshwater in Greenland fjords matters for ecosystems, i.e., plankton blooms. Also, fjords can mix freshwater before it is exported to the shelf seas, where it might or might not impact large-scale ocean circulation, such as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).

On the train home from Vienna to Utrecht, I'm finishing my map I made during a short course "Scientific Worldbuilding" by @geologytalk.bsky.social at #EGU25.

It was great to 'map out' my PhD so far (: . I'm still looking for a name of this island. Any thoughts?

Can I join too? And do you know of a starterpack for fjords/ Subpolar North Atlantic?

Happy to have presented my poster yesterday at #EGU25

Missed it? Check it out here!

📊 Also there are some cool posters, and mine 😉, on Monday morning for Session CR2.5.

☕️ Just enough time to pick up your morning coffee and head with a fresh head to Hall X5!

On Monday and Tuesday morning, I'm co-convening a ***NEW*** session on 'Advances at the ice-ocean interface', with orals in room L3 on Tuesday. We have talks on e.g. fjord observations in the Northern Hemisphere and models of fjord, both complex and simple!

Dit gaat dus echt helemaal de verkeerde kant op. Een wetenschappelijk instituut dat geen wetenschappelijk onderbouwde antwoorden meer kan/mag geven.

"When New Scientist asked explicitly if human-caused climate change played any role in the record high temperatures, the NOAA press representative abruptly ended the call, saying, “I’m not seeing any more on-topic questions from the media""
NOAA scientists refuse to link warming weather to climate change
In a monthly reporting call on global climate, researchers from the US government’s climate and weather agency avoided mentioning rising levels of greenhouse gases
