📊 We find that the ratio of how much glaciated areas melt versus how much accumulation they receive is a good predictor for how important solid ice discharge as a freshwater source is in a region.

🌨️ Before the melt season, seasonal snow melt can actually be the largest source of freshwater.

🧊 In the northwest and southeast of Greenland, solid ice discharge (e.g., calving icebergs) is the biggest contributor throughout the year.

🔬 In our research, we quantified and analyzed where the freshwater components entering fjords come from.

❄️ We find that in June-August, meltwater runoff from the ice sheet is the most important source of freshwater in Greenland's fjords (with regional differences).

🌊 Freshwater in Greenland fjords matters for ecosystems, i.e., plankton blooms. Also, fjords can mix freshwater before it is exported to the shelf seas, where it might or might not impact large-scale ocean circulation, such as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).
