Another HOT TAKE on Australia's 2035 targets, but also a comment more generally on rise of climate "realism" and "pragmatism", where simply giving up on trying to stop us being killed by fossil fuels is presented as the Very Reasonable and Very Serious thing to do.

Really looking forward to having to migrate from the centralised social platform faking federation to the federated social platform faking centralisation

I saw my first Mercedes Econic garbage truck in Newcastle the other day and was so excited! This is the kind of vehicle we should be demanding in Canada to stop the killing of pedestrians and cyclists. Canada has hewed to the USA safety standards, but now is the time to go our own way.
Canada should make side guards on trucks mandatory; the usual excuse no longer works
Now that we are plotting an independent course from the USA, it’s time to develop our own safety strategies and standards.

I am once again asking why these data centers are all fucking SECRETS

"A controversial plan to build a 2.2-million-square-foot data center on farmland may still happen. A rural community... is looking to settle a lawsuit recently filed by a development firm working for an unidentified tech giant."

Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

Federal Agents Storm South Shore Building, Detaining Families and Children
Families were woken by flashbangs and helicopters as hundreds of federal agents raided their homes. Days later, neighbors are still searching for the missing.

Scoop: OpenAI has signed its first ever Australia government contract, quietly inking a deal with Treasury amid the ChatGPT-maker's charm offensive on policymakers.

This modest contract is an ideal foothold into future, more lucrative deals, according to one firm's analysis.

Secrecy is a huge factor in the tactics of tech companies carpet-bombing communities with oversized and destructive data centres.

Go listen to this pod feat @keshaunpearson.bsky.social @ambakak.bsky.social and others to get a very, very compelling overview -->

I’m sure it’s just a coincidence that all these data centers are going into communities that have been historically targeted for exploitation and have the least amount of civic power wielded by the people living there.

Waymo's success is remarkable proof of the power of AI. It's also remarkable proof of its limitations. Waymo's need for limited domains and powerful perception hardware, and the failure of Tesla's "AI-first" approach without them, holds powerful lessons about the limits of probabilistic inference.
bluespacecanary.bsky.social
It's fascinating to me that there's a whole "AI skeptic" misinformation ecosystem out there that somehow continues to deny that Waymo exists. Like, this is easy to fact check! Waymo runs publicly-available service in 5 cities, you can just go look up how it works and see it's not planned routes!
A bluesky post with the user's handle cropped out: "In 2015, I was told, confidently, that AI would end human drivers in the trucking industry w/in 5 years.

[Begin my highlight]10 years later, and there’s what-some experimental cabs rolling around a few cities in heavily-engineered preset routes?[end my highlight]

Not to mention the fact that the AI industry itself is Enron on heroin."

google wants to introduce errors into my spreadsheets and attribute them to me
screenshot of a popup on Google Sheets with two buttons "Learn more" and "Got it"

header reads "Gemini can now do more for you in Sheets" with "for" scribbled out in red, and the word AS above it, so it says "Gemini can now do more AS you in Sheets"

below that:
Gemini can now make requested changes and insert content directly into your files.

HIGHLIGHTED TEXT: All inserted content will be attributed to you in version history.

For inline features like =Al), Gemini will insert content directly. For the side panel, Gemini will provide a preview first unless it understands your goal is a direct edit, such as making a pivot table or adding conditional formatting.
Gemini in Workspace can make mistakes, including about people, so double-check responses.

Not sure people realize how INSANELY DRAINING data centers will be on our planet.

If you imagine data centers as their own country, they'll rank fourth in global electricity use by 2035 — outranked only by China, India, and the U.S.

Read this in @bloomberg.com👇

www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...
AI Data Centers Are Sending Power Bills Soaring
Wholesale electricity costs as much as 267% more than it did five years ago in areas near data centers. That’s being passed on to customers.

right - if I were depicting and explicitly describing climate progress or laggardism in the post, I would've used a different metric.
