I have not actually read the new climate obstruction book yet but my mate sent me this really excellent extract

Corporate Ventriloquism

Corporate ventriloquism is a rhetorical process by which companies transmit messages through other entities, usually of their own creation, to construct and animate an alternative ethos, voice, or identity that advances their interests.

Some companies have used corporate ventriloquism to advance their agendas through support for community organizations.

Ventriloquism Companies may create front groups and information campaigns, but also leverage corporate social responsibility strategies that invest in community development. Such strategies have been used for decades as a means for industry actors to underscore their legitimacy and to shore up the perception that they are positive social contributors to the environments in which they operate.

Research has shown how extractive industries such as coal have invested heavily in local communities to sow solidarity and support for the industry.

Material investments such as parks, community centers, sponsored events (concerts, car shows, etc.), and museums are not only a means of winning support through material investment in communities (a form of philanthropy or bribery), but also of symbolically “branding” the community and of making it more difficult for the community to oppose industry goals.

Similarly, investor-owned utilities sponsor sports stadiums and museums—branding efforts that double as philanthropy—in their efforts to effectively blur the line between public and private interests.

you'd never guess from reading today's @australia.theguardian.com article on the rising fortunes of One Nation that they're a hateful, racist party

Well, they are.

Not sharing the Dan Jervis-Bardy piece
yungenchee.bsky.social
All 4 senators of the racist One Nation party: Pauline Hanson, Malcolm Roberts, Warwick Stacey & Tyron Whitten, turned their backs in blatant disrespect during the Acknowledgement of Country at the opening of Federal Parliament

But all that's tickety-boo for Labor & the Coalition

It's actually WORSE

Labor SA Premier Malinauskas has also teamed up with Woodside to GASLIGHT THE PUBLIC

No, WoodCIDE & Premier Malinauskas, ⬆️ FOSSIL GAS production INCREASES C & GHG pollution to our shared atmosphere & worsens #ClimateBreakdown—⬆️ FOSSIL GAS supply is NOT "a net zero solution"☠️
Screenshot of a Woodside Energy LinkedIn quote-post of a post from Liz Westcott

It reads:
"Our Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Australia Liz
Westcott caught up with the South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas at The Australian's Energy Nation Conference and thanked him for his powerful endorsement for the role of gas."

Liz Westcott's post reads:
"It was great to catch up with Peter Malinauskas at The Australian's Energy Nation Forum in Sydney.

The Premier shared a compelling example of the role gas can play in decarbonisation.

He said that the Whyalla steelworks transitioning from a blast furnace burning metallurgical coal to using gas for direct iron production would halve the annual emissions of the steelworks.

But the Premier said to achieve it, South Australia will need a lot more gas than is currently available.

To put it another way, he said his support for gas is underpinned by his support for net zero.

At Woodside we wholeheartedly agree. Increased gas supply is a net zero solution.

Thank you for your unequivocal advocacy Premier."

This is devastating but hard to think of more important journalism. 18,457 children have been killed in Gaza (many more not accounted for). Here, The Guardian prints their names and beautiful faces and tells us what they were like before Israel stole their lives. www.theguardian.com/world/ng-int...

the hysterically overwrought, bloviating ones from the likes of ADVANCE & IPA are also available for perusal

these I predict, will serve as teaching materials for courses on critical thinking, media literacy etc

Excerpt from the IPA's submission to the Select Committee on Information Integrity on Climate Change and Energy

"The Institute of Public Affairs has also revealed that in practice enforcement of misinformation and disinformation policies tends to be biased. Under the Australian Code of Practice on Disinformation and Misinformation, social media companies promise to make efforts to address misinformation and disinformation on their platforms. This is commonly outsourced to third-party factchecking organisations such as AAP FactCheck, RMIT FactLab, and the ABC (formerly RMIT ABC Fact Check, now ABC News Verify) to adjudicate whether claims or statements are misinformation or disinformation. The IPA's analysis found these entities are consistently biased in how they respond to claims by or about political parties and in relation to major public policy debates. The analysis found:
• Between 2019 and February 2024, factchecking organisations collectively conducted 249 investigations into claims by or about political parties or figures, with 65 per cent of verdicts being favourable to the political left, while 35 per cent were favourable to the political right.
• Of the 534 fact checking investigations undertaken in relation to statements made about Covid-19 policy, 502 (94 per cent) targetted critics of the official response to the pandemic."

Traditional Owners don't want the Narrabri Gas project. NSW Farmers don't want it. Unions don't want it. Environmentalists don't want it. Locals don't want it.

Only Chris Minns and his gas cartel mates want the Narrabri Gas project. So whose side is Labor on?

Labor pledged to save $6.4bn through cutting the government's use of consultants and external labour, and yet here they are forking out more. The government's focus must be on rebuilding the public service for core work functions.

You can have a situation with rising renewable absolute output and percentages of total (and falling emissions intensity!), but also stagnant or even rising greenhouse gas emissions: when *demand* itself is rising fast.

This is very clearly the case in Aus, and it should trigger alarm bells
