It’s #InternationalWolfDay — a good time to share my latest story with support from @journalismfund.bsky.social. The wolf’s return stirs emotions: symbol of nature’s recovery or living threat? Or does it simply expose our reluctance to share space with wildlife? In Dutch — but #chatgpt can help.

Seven out of nine planetary boundaries have been exceeded. Imagine rolling back environmental laws right now... Oh, wait... That's exactly what the EU is doing! 😅🥹

The Baltic Sea is under pressure from oil drilling projects.

As well as posing an immediate risk of spills, such plans contradict climate goals and put fragile marine ecosystems under strain.

Protect our seas and our future! ✍👇

Keep the Baltic Sea clean and safe!
Imagine your favourite beach crowded with oil rigs and spills 😢 I just signed a petition to stop drilling in the Baltic - let’s keep our seas clean and safe for wildlife, climate, and our future! 🌊💚

🚨 NEW: By the end of this video, Europe will have lost 2850m² of land to construction. That’s almost half a Premier League football pitch.

This rate of loss, amounting to 600 football pitches a day, is 1.5 times higher than official EEA estimates.

This is the #GreenToGrey project. [1/3]

Gray wolves are making a comeback in the U.S. state of California after a century-long absence. Conservationists say their return is a success, but it’s putting pressure on ranchers and rural communities as wolf attacks on livestock mount, Mongabay wildlife staff writer Spoorthy Raman reported.

What does it really mean for people, politics, and ecosystems to have Europe’s bison back? A new cross-border investigation peels back the easy narrative of “return to wild” and reveals conflicts and trade-offs that may define whether the success lasts. #earthinvestigations #biodiversity

Conservation brought back Europe’s wolves and bears from the brink, but politics is threatening them once again. The EU has moved to weaken protections despite evidence that coexistence with large carnivores is possible. Read the investigation on our website⬇️
The Unravelling of a Success Story: How Politics Is Killing Europe’s Wolves
The EU’s fresh support for culling threatens wolves and bears and fails to ensure co-existence between humans and large predators.

4/ Across Europe, prevention is sidelined and politics dominates. The wolf has become the test case for whether EU nature laws are based on science or will collapse under pressure.

3/ Wolves are keystone predators and are vital for biodiversity. Yet fear and misinformation are fuelling calls for culls, even though coexistence is working: in Flanders, for example, wolf-related damage to livestock has dropped by 50% over three years thanks to preventive fencing.

2/ In 2022, Brussels rejected Switzerland's proposal to downgrade wolf protection, deeming it "scientifically unjustified". However, by 2024, the EU had made the same proposal, giving in to farmer discontent and party agendas.

🐺🇪🇺 How Europe Turned Against Its Wolves

1/ Once hailed as a conservation triumph, Europe’s wolf comeback (from ~12,000 in 2012 to +21,000 today) is now under attack. Politics, not science, is driving this rollback of protections.

Join us tomorrow 26/08 at 11.30 at Mont des Arts #Brussels to honour the 200+ journalists killed in #Gaza and demand: Israel, stop killing journalists!

A public reading of the names of the journalists killed in Gaza will pay tribute to their courage, condemn their murder and call for justice.
