This collaboration has been a pleasure. Our @longplay.fi team got to work alongside journalists from Le Monde, Die Zeit, Datadista, De Standaard, Facta, Gazeta Wyborcza, Reporters United, The Black Sea, The Guardian, and of course @journalismarena.eu that initiated the project with NRK.

In this story, @hannanik.bsky.social, @pulsa.fi and myself tried to figure out why Finland is not able to stop building.

One explanation lies in Finnish dream of detached homeownership and the conflicting goals faced by municipalities — trying to protect nature while also aiming for growth.

This project reveals that nature loss due to construction is a widespread issue across Europe - even in Scandinavian countries.

When the figures are adjusted for population size, Finland ranks as the second worst in Europe — just behind Norway.

@longplay.fi has more findings from Finland:

The method uses satellite imagery, AI and manual fact-checking to map “land take” across Europe.

It was originally used by nature mapping expert Zander Venter (NINA) and NRK to map nature loss in Norway.

The #GreenToGrey project expanded the method to the whole of Europe.

In the #GreenToGrey project, journalists from 11 countries worked with scientists from NINA to refine their methodology for measuring nature loss.

This is a story of how precious ecosystems are turned into housing estates, logistics centers, industrial cites - you name it - all across Europe.

Our year-long collaborative investigation has landed, and the findings are stark.

Every year, Europe loses 1,500km² to construction.

This is the equivalent of 600 football pitches every day, 1.5 times more than official EEA estimates.

🚨 NEW: By the end of this video, Europe will have lost 2850m² of land to construction. That’s almost half a Premier League football pitch.

This rate of loss, amounting to 600 football pitches a day, is 1.5 times higher than official EEA estimates.

This is the #GreenToGrey project. [1/3]
