15- 2025 DNFs

I think I DNFed eight books this year. I got the furtherest into these four:

- Immortal Dark by Tigest Girma
- Pandora by Susan Stokes-Chapman
- If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio
- Stoner by John Williams

I’m definitely not reading anything by her ever again.

They have a scene where her boss is like “You’re the best in the agency” and like two chapters later she’s crying on the job because her ex was mean to her and her client has to comfort her. 🙄

I fucking hated this book.

14- A book not worth the hype

The Bodyguard by Katherine Center is a waste of a premise. If you promise me a female bodyguard to a male actor, what I’m hearing is reversed gender roles. But no. The guy still ended up being the strong manly protector and I hated every second of it.

My mom is an avid bird watcher so I see a few owls every winter when I’m with her!

Although I really want to read this in 2026. It’s one of the earliest feminist texts, but since it’s written by a nun it’s probably very religious as well.

I’m just completely fascinated by the first feminist writers.

They look great! But also, genuinely, don’t they get stuck in everything?

13- A book someone recommended

A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson was a fast read for me, and a good one. It’s about the brides of Dracula rebelling against him to gain their freedom. I also adore the cover.

12- A book that made me sad/angry

One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This by Omar El Akkad is about the Western response, or lack thereof, to the genocide in Palestine. Endlessly quotable, it puts into words all the horrific complacency we’ve been observing for years.

11- Unnecessary sequel

This breaks my heart because it’s not a bad book, really not, but if my beloved Murderbot Diaries have a weakest link, it’s Fugitive Telemetry.

You could delete it from the series without consequences. It’s still a fun time, but it’s not on par with its siblings.
