Scarsdale was a rare bright spot. In most parts of the country, people like Dohrenwend won the day. Local groups like his received significant support from national organizations with anodyne titles like the Nationall Council for American Education, founded by a far-right activist named Allen Zoll. During the 1930s Zoll had founded an anti-Semitic, pro-fascist group called American Patriots. It was considered so extreme that the military refused his application for civilian intelligence training during World War II. Zoll's new group established itself as an arbiter for patriotic education and as a watchdog against subversives. He pumped out a steady stream of pamphlets with titles like "How Red Are the Schools?" "Pro-gressive Education Increases Delinquency, "They Want Your Child," and "Red-ucators at Harvard." He created a blacklist of sorts, keeping track of ousted teachers and circulating them to his subscribers around the coun-try, to prevent educators from relocating to a new state and reentering the profession. And he developed a running list of subversive books, insisting that school and public libraries get rid of them immediately. Hundreds followed his orders; one library, in Oklahoma, even burned its suspicious texts, out of expediency or stridency or both.

remember having this exact same experience....

in my last newsroom i was part of a group of employees who made similar requests for pay transparency and other real, tangible changes to company practices. they were rejected immediately.

but they did put out lots of statements.
Lawson put it another way: “My job was not to cure racism.” Not long after Floyd was killed, the company she was working at tasked her with finding recommendations on how to better support Black employees. “We came up with the real ideas—better pay and promotions. I brought it to the head of HR and they said, ‘None of this seems like it’s going to give us a headline. I need something that’ll help get us a headline.’” That’s when she realized what was actually going on. “The corporate function of DEI is not to actually make things better—it is to pacify.”

"Sorry, but AI will bring no bonanzas to news. The deals done so far — payments from big AI companies to various media moguls — are not at all about licensing of content. These have been lobbying expenses, to buy companies’ silence when it comes to PR, legislation, and litigation. In the future, AI companies may make some payments for particular content, but rather than blanket licensing, I predict these will be predicated on a per-use basis. Keep in mind that AI companies aren’t particularly profitable so far. Until they figure out their own business models — whether advertising (and we know what media’s own attention economy did to ruin the web) or commerce (agents advertising to agents), or subscriptions (a problematic model as long as AI remains commodified) — there won’t be much revenue to share."

this aspect of things has been on my mind so much lately. early career people are getting screwed perhaps the hardest of all, not just in journalism but across all kinds of fields. relentless focus on output discourages learning & growth. saving time at any cost actually has a high price in the end
THE LOCAL NHB: The other thing you said that struck me, and is kind of tragic, is that the easiest way to tell that someone's legit and that the pitch is good is their body of work. If they've written for you, and you know them, that is a safe way to do things. Part of what we want to do at The Local, part of what I'm always trying to do, is develop new writers. I know that's what you folks try to do as well. That's literally in our mandate. If I'm trying to assign seven stories, I want two of them to be to new and emerging writers who maybe haven't done this before, but that you trust that you can work with them, train them up. I don't know how that trust can happen now. I don't know how young freelancers get their foot in the door in this new world. We're not going to give up on it and just work with people we know, but it's definitely something we have to figure out.

It's a regular subject of discussion. What are the feminine vices in that story? Andrews: Gossiping. Inability to deal with conflict directly and kind of suppressing conflict. An aversion to directness, which, naturally, in a workplace, is a big problem because you need to be able to give direct feedback to people, including negative feedback.
