The hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin) is a weird & wonderful bird, native to the Orinoco & Amazon basins in South America, where it lives in trees overhanging rivers & marshes.

It has a striking look reminiscent of fossil birds like Archaeopteryx, but is more closely related to cranes & plovers.
A striking bird with a long crest of feathers on the head. The coloration is a rusty brown, with white/black striping along the neck, a blue-grey featherless face like a vulture, and a surprisingly thick tapered neck. A speaker in the UK says all Americans know this painting. I had never seen it before. Anyone else?
This painting shows Manifest Destiny, the belief in westward expansion of the United States from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. It was widely distributed as an engraving called "Spirit of the Frontier". Settlers are moving west, guided and protected by Columbia, aided by modern technology like railroads, and driving Native Americans and bison into obscurity. Columbia represents America, dressed in a Roman toga to represent classical republicanism, and brings the enlightened east to the darkened west.
