It is impossible to be bored, on such an amazing planet
And here’s why we never see them from the road…they are often vegetated and lower lying…though some are better developed and obvious.

Is it just a strange coincidence that the name of the road where these “Biscuit Scablands” features are located is called “Bakeoven Road”?

Not sure which is crazier…this loop or the one below Shaniko…but if you have a few hours, they can both be done in the same day.

Me too. Lately I have been discovering textbooks owned by my old professors and colleagues in book shops across the PNW. I don’t know why, but I can never let them just be there…they (the profs) meant so much to me that I can’t stand to see them languishing unsold.

A warm winter’s eve
Along a calm Pacific shore
Spruce enveloped in moss
Protect their sap-filled core

Memories of the day
Still fill the heart with fondness
For a world warm and hospitable
With nary a hint of violence

Place has come a long way from when my dad was there…He doesn’t understand how far astray policing has gone.

No more “Officer Friendly”…but maybe it has something to do with the ever increasing danger or the job.

Some recent additions to the library of the obscure…

An even older version (than I had) of Lyell and one of the early USGS reports to the Director (JW Powell!).

Cheaply bought due to condition, and because the small out of the way bookstore has low turnover on stuff like this.

There’s a fine line between participation and mockery.

I am on the frontlines of that battle.

Last post of the day, from #WarRavagedPortland

Things got pretty dicey today, after the drones were launched. Not sure their capabilities or intent…even means of launch looks suspect. Hoping to make it to morning.

Now things are really starting to escalate…

Elected leaders brave The Ravagery to warn Portlanders that help is on the way. Here, Mayor Keith begs Trump to send exactly ZERO troops to our #CityUnderSeige

Potted up this very proto-bonsai for a friend. Perfect starter tree…really only requires morning sun/afternoon shade, water, fertilizer once a year and a bit of trimming from time to time. Bones are there…could be a good little tree in 5 more years.

Feature or flaw?

Once a throw away tree, decided to pot, chop a few major limbs and see what develops.

Spruce are quite brittle once limbs >1/4”, so setting some limbs will need to take place soon.

Moving crown to accentuate or hide the two previous cuts?

Thoughts??

Short Birds Nest Spruce with massive canopy. These trees (ground cover habit) seem like an easy species to cultivate as bonsai…due to their easy back budding and almost natural/inevitable pad formation. Getting them to spread vertically is a bit of a challenge…

Hinoki Cypress split trunk. This tree must be nearing 10 years in my care…after 10ish years in the back pasture of a local nursery.

Been trying to bring canopy down/and compact…but they want to be leggy and don’t back bud! The winter storm took out some minor limbs.

A bendy Pinus Contorta in a free from #Bonsai pot from a local potter. This tree was a stowaway in a field collected hemlock I purchased at a local garden shop years ago. A nice bonus!

About 6-7 years old now.

Conifer row…

A bunch of swarthy pines and hemlocks and other stuff in the “hot zone” of the garage…newly rebuilt after last year’s devastating storm cleaved it with a falling fir.

This is the location where all my bonsai were to shelter from the icy winds!
