Earth Lover. Geology ⛏️, cartography🗺️, earth history, coastal processes 🌊 , sedimentation, volcanism🌋 , climate 🌎, soils…Oh, and bonsai🪴 and bad poetry and bad poetry about rocks 🪨

It is impossible to be bored, on such an amazing planet

Halcyon holocene days have lapsed

Like hours whiled away waiting

For a time to come that has already passed

Certainty a luxury of the past

Fate intertwined with a planet ailing

I feel like every member of the NFL Chain Gangs need to go to a one day surveying course for a refresher on how you can’t measure something accurately without a known reference point.

Why do they drag their Point of Beginning to the center of the field?

Also the concept of parallax.

Had to pull out the Registered Geologist License today and make a Scientist’s Arrest.

I demanded all posters be placed into a pile in the middle of the store and ceremonially burned.

I think they appreciated my adherence to the principle that all art should be fact based.

Fill in the blank with your favorite hacks.
Big Volcano doesn’t want you to know you can build your own from ash and cinder.

What other Bigs are blocking our DIY aspirations?

Stumbled upon this today…remnants of the #Pleistocene along #Oregon Hwy 218…and their origin is ancient freeze-thaw like most patterned ground…but resulting in great mounds or the “Biscuit Scablands”.

Just found this paper in my box, had to come see if you even posted it…somehow I missed this!

Great work by that team…and the broad applicability of stratigraphy to so many disciplines…illuminating.

Kind of makes me wish we hadn’t chided the sport in our “Sedentary Geology” courses!

Bravo!

stratigraphy is the key to disentangling prehistoric earthquake records for the Cascadia and San Andreas fault systems

evidence suggests that in the past 3ka, Cascadia precedes San Andreas, often over short time

In a twist that surprises absolutely no one… #Oregon ‘s Ouija Board Tax Revenue System…revenue is down so the state budget is being downscaled in an emergency basis…while returning a $1 billion kicker back to the tax payers.

This is heads you lose, tails we win system that keeps roads, schools…

Your vote is your voice — your power to shape the future, protect rights, & demand accountability. Every ballot is a stand for justice, progress, & hope. Don’t sit out — show up, speak up, & vote blue like the future depends on it. Because it does.

Billionaires rapidly increase their wealth in the United States while poverty rises and life expectancy lowers. Meanwhile, military spending skyrockets, the federal deficit balloons, but relief for hunger is in limbo. Truly appalling:

'The existence and validity of human rights are not written in the stars..

A large part of history is therefore replete with the struggle for those rights.. in which a final victory can never be won.

But to tire in that struggle would mean the ruin of society'

A year ago, a legend passed…and like so many times these days…news of their passing barely registered.

An accomplished highly recognized Volcanologist, Hans-Ulrich Schmincke literally wrote THE book on Pyroclastic Rocks along with RV Fisher.
