In the wake of the United States’ shocking military intervention in Venezuela, Transparency International is calling for restoring democracy to be prioritised, to protect the rights of Venezuelans and address the country’s entrenched corruption crisis.

François Valérian, Chair of Transparency International, said: “International laws are there to protect all of us – all governments must respect the rule of law and fundamental rights. The priority now must be restoring a healthy democracy in Venezuela, to ensure its people can shape its future. Any decisions about Venezuela’s oil and natural resources must be made transparently by legitimate Venezuelan leaders acting in the interests of the Venezuelan population, not by the United States.” Mercedes de Freitas, Executive Director of Transparency International Venezuela, said: “Years of widespread corruption and illicit activities in Venezuela have seen poverty and malnutrition soar as millions of families survive on limited food, water and electricity, while facing extortion by armed gangs and state officials. To change this reality, we now need an honest and transparent state that is truly accountable to Venezuelans - which respects human rights, guarantees an independent justice system and protects public resources for the benefit of all. The will of the Venezuelan people to live in a free democracy must be respected.”

#CoSP11: 🎉 Last week, countries adopted a resolution that sets minimum standards for political finance transparency.

This is the first time this has happened since the UN Convention against Corruption entered into force 20 years ago.

#CoSP11: Political finance systems can be easily abused, with loopholes that allow money to disrupt democracy. Governments must act now to restore trust in institutions and to protect democracy from hidden influence.

Transparency in political finance is the exception, not the rule. Only a few countries make campaign finance information available online.

The UN Convention against Corruption promises civil society a role in anti-corruption.

However, almost half of the countries reviewed by UNCAC received no recommendations on civil society participation.

⚠️ In November 2025, the #EUSEE programme recorded many deterioration alerts globally, as the enabling environment for civil society continues to be eroded. Some of the trends include election violence and crackdowns on dissent.

🚨 The Slovakian Parliament just approved fast-tracking a bill that could slash key rules to protect whistleblowers. ⬇️

The bill, which will be voted on next week, would dismantle its Office for the Protection of Whistleblowers (WPO) in order to replace it with a new and weaker one.
For years, Slovakia has been a model in Europe for its rules to safeguard those who speak up against corruption. This progress is now in danger of being lost.
