On Feb. 20, 1959, the government cancelled the Arrow program. That day, 14,000 Avro employees lost their jobs. Every Avro Arrow was destroyed along with all blueprints, models and designs. Many Avro employees went on to work at NASA and in the Concord program in the UK.

As well, in 1957, the Progressive Conservatives under John Diefenbaker ended 22 years of Liberal rule. Dief made cutting federal spending a major priority. He also did not get along with Avro president Crawford Gordon.

On Oct. 4, 1957, the Avro Arrow was unveiled with the intention of it being the RCAF's primary interceptor in the 1960s.
Less than two years later, the program was abruptly cancelled and 14,528 Avro employees were put out of work.
This is the story of the Arrow.
