Animal Testing Under REACH: It’s Time to Take “Last Resort” Seriously [Promoted content]

The European legal framework requires its Member States to pay full regard to animal welfare standards when formulating and implementing policies. Yet, when it comes to chemical safety, the EU’s flagship regulation, REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals), still relies heavily on animal testing, despite its stated commitment to making this a “last resort.”

Testing #chemicals on #animals often involves giving a group of mice, guinea pigs and other species, higher and higher doses until 50% of them die, just to estimate the amount that might be safe for people. ☠️🐭🚫 It’s cruel and unnecessary.

3. ENVI also supported giving priority to the use of non-animal methods, with animal testing on vertebrate animals only as a last resort.

We hope that these amendments by ENVI are supported during the Plenary vote in April!

1. Good news! The @europarl.europa.eu's ENVI Committee today voted on the proposed Regulation for a Common Data Platform on chemicals, which is part of the One Substance One Assessment (OSOA).
