Out now in New Political Economy is our article on China's impact in Venezuela's economic development. @benedictebull.bsky.social and I analyze the China-Venezuela relationship's effect on three main dimensions of development: industrialisation, economic diversification, and institutional capacity 🧵
Chinese impact on development in Venezuela: the dynamics of structural stagnation
This article traces the impact of China’s engagement on development in Venezuela from 2001 to 2023. We build on long-established theories of development and evaluate how the relationship has influe...

People on board the boat were said to have survived an initial strike and were killed in a follow-up attack. Officials said the boat appeared to have turned back toward shore. Three sources, including Sen. Rand Paul said the boat was attacked by one or more drones.

For the poor in Venezuela, crypto is a makeshift opportunity for survival. For the rich, it's a tool for making quick profits and side-stepping sanctions.

On the US incursion in the Caribbean with eye on #Venezuela, we recommend looking at our members' analysis for guidance and comprehension of the complex situation.

In no specific order and not necessarily in agreement amongst them.

Today lecturing about the Expulsion of the Jews in 1492. In other years, students pointed out how cruel it was to give people three months to sell their possessions and leave Castile and Aragon. How is that going down now that US is grabbing people in the street and deporting them to foreign gulags?

"The cruel irony here is that a military operation applauded by Venezuelan immigrants in hopes of freeing their country from Nicolás Maduro is more likely to free Donald Trump to deport them from the U.S., without the benefits of due process."

@dsmilde.bsky.social right on point, as usual.

In this article on @thedispatchmedia.bsky.social I try to peel away some of the nonsense and figure out what is going on with the US operation off of the coast of VE. TLDR: it's less about drugs than geopolitics and immigration.

On the US threats off #Venezuela
´having warships off the coast of Venezuela, presumably to fight off Cartel de los Soles and its supposed operational arm, the Tren de Aragua, from “flooding the U.S. with drugs,” could pass muster for a “military conflict.”´

3️⃣ In 2023, Venezuela and China relaunched their relationship, guided by more pragmatic policies and Venezuela seeking to align more closely with China’s model of market socialism.
antuliorosales.bsky.social
2️⃣ A second phase was characterised by a process of isolationism imposed by the US through sanctions and China’s reluctance to rescue Venezuela. In this phase, the relationship stagnated, oil exports plummeted, and debt relief became necessary.
antuliorosales.bsky.social
Lack of attention to institutional capacity resulted in feedback loops that incentivized a lack of oversight and accountability, leading to corruption. This first phase culminated in increasing primary sector dependence rather than diversification, along with mounting foreign debt.
