Confucians were thus "opposed to fǎ" in two ways, at least in theory. In practice, authoritarian rule under the sign of Confucianism was how things ran for most of the history of imperial China (though Confucianism was also an idiom for opposing what we would call authoritarianism today).

法 (fǎ -- third tone) has historically designated a "Legalist" "school" or "philosophy" that is associated with realpolitik, severe punishments, hard character. But it also has designated the Buddhists' "dharma."
