“For free? Why? What’s the catch?” I glared skeptically, crossing my arms. Zubin slowly lifted himself from the bed and made his way to the kitchen. “I just ask that you’d be willing to be there for me so long as I’m there for you. Is that good?” She asked, Aithne’s offer was fair. Simply put, she wanted companionship without fault or betrayal. Something both Zubin and I were willing to provide. “Very well… One last thing… You give off the aura of a pyromancer, and yet you say you’re a healer. I must ask about that, if I may?” “You may,” Aithne said, tipping the ashes of her pipe out onto the floor. She allowed her tail to brush them under the bed. “I’m a special kind of healer, called a cauterist. My power to burn is also my power to heal.” I looked perplexed, but equally, I was enlightened. Offensive magic that had been channeled into healing capabilities. It sounded almost too unreal. “Very well! Looks like we have ourselves a healer!” I announced. Aithne gave a satisfied smile, and I could sense some relief in there as well.

Food stalls sold cakes and breads for the festivity, as performers created assortments of illusions and spectacles with a mix of fire and light work. One performer had created a dragon of fire that soared across the sky over the town square, breathing small candies on children as it flew by. At one point, the square had cleared for a horse race as well. Zubin eventually sat on the sill next to me to watch the festival. Before we knew it, our hands rested on each other, and we both felt comfortable with how close we were. “Should we join them?” I asked, starting to intertwine my fingers with Zubin’s. “No, here is perfect.” He replied, holding my hand more intensely.

After checking with the tailor, I returned to our room at the inn. If not for the endless capability of the portable hole, I would fear my neck would snap from the weight of everything I carried. I entered the room to find Zubin face down on the floor, and Aithne standing on him like a settler on a newfound island. “What have you two gotten yourselves into?” I asked as I began to unfurl my bandana onto the floor. Zubin could only respond with a mumble, while Aithne answered for him. “His back was misaligned, so I’m working out the kinks.” She confirmed, pressing her claws deep into his spine. A firm sizzle could be heard, as if she were standing on a bed of lit charcoal.

Zubin found himself waking to the scent of grilled fish. The campfire lit warmly with skewered fish settled across it, a pile of yet-to-be-prepared fish sitting to be skewered. The demonic cat-folk sat up from their stupor to find me sitting and eating as I waited for him. “Madainn Mhath, my friend! I caught us some fish for breakfast!” “Some fish?” He questioned, looking at the large pile. “Is the stream now as barren as the Plane of Earth?” “Oh, hush. A little bit of getting carried away never hurt a soul.” I remarked as Zubin sat next to me. Despite how large the fish were, they looked like mere minnows in his hands. “It hurt plenty of fish.” Zubin teased, giving me a gentle nudge. I smiled and tried to nudge back, finding it as difficult as moving a boulder.

“Was?” I asked, cutting off a piece of owlbear meat and chewing on it. The taste was salty but savory, with a heavy amount of fat. “Truthfully, they abandoned me. The life of a woman is not one favored by the Green Knights, and they treated my choice to be one as a betrayal.” She lamented, lowering herself and looking downtrodden. “I see…” I said. I now felt glad to have been ignorant of them. “You were found not only burned by our friend’s firebolt, but you were covered in cuts and bruises. Is it reasonable to assume that you were abandoned for weeks on end?” “I was, yes. I did not mean to intrude on your campsite; I just so happened to be nearby. If I am a burden to you, I can leave.” She said, starting to sit up in bed. I quickly set my plate down to help her up. “No, no need. You’re more than alright. In fact, we could use your help. My companions and I are on a mission, one to save Apothecaria.” I started, proceeding to explain our reasoning for being in the Summer Court and how she could help.

Each main character in Apothecaria met each other through some level of abandonment and found family. Whether it be the ignorance of the town they had known, being cast aside by a society based on their intelligence, getting tossed aside for being transgender, losing your old family in trauma, etc.;

“Truth be told, I want others to feel happy and inspired, and while I am reckless, I do try to live in people’s best interests.” I confessed and smiled patiently, “Enough about me, though. What inspired you to steal King Ozhen’s crown, and what did you hear at the council meeting that took away so much joy in your eyes?” “Yes, of course. I did promise to tell you.” Zubin remembered and began to dress in his newly fashioned robe as he told me his troubles. “I’m a half-rakshasa cat-folk. I once lived in the Brass City many years ago. I came on hard times and thought coming to Apothecaria would give me a second chance at prosperity. Yet, I found this city harsh for one of my kind– no magic, and I was pushed into poverty a second time. In desperation, I thought of stealing King Ozhen’s crown and returning it to make a profit. Truth be told, not a clever plan. In my efforts to escape, I stumbled upon the city council. They were discussing recent intelligence from their spies, and they had discovered a plot to destroy Apothecaria.”

“Oh, nonsense, you just didn’t try hard enough!” Aithne quipped, leaping from her seat and running up to Zubin. She took hold of his hands and attempted to yank him from his seat. Reluctantly, Zubin agreed, getting on his knees in an attempt to meet the kobold at eye level. “There is a leyline right underneath us. We’re going to try tapping into it by force. That should awaken your sense of magic within you.” Aithne added, taking Zubin’s hands and guiding them to the ground. “Isn’t this incredibly dangerous?” Zubin contested, a faint hum as he rested his palms on the grass and moss of the forest clearing. “Nonsense. Now, energy flows through the leyline. Most of the time, it’s faint. Yet it isn’t a perfect flow. The moment you sense even the slightest pulse of energy, I want you to try yanking at it.” She encouraged, backing away so Zubin had time to work. Nervously, Zubin nodded and closed his eyes, trying to focus on the hum of the ground and trying deeply to sense any kind of pulse…

“Zubin Prahvari. I didn’t expect to see you ever again. Shall I call you my old friend again?” I asked as a temptation roused in me to raise a hand to his chin. “That all depends on whether I’ve forgiven you or not.” Zubin contested. “What you did all those years ago was pretty unforgivable. However, I feel three hundred years of silence is enough time to mull things over.” I couldn’t speak and didn’t have the right words to say. I merely sat there, trying desperately not to shatter the whiskey glass in my hand, as I stared deeply into his eyes. He could tell how terrible I had felt, and his smile softened with patience.

After much traveling on foot, Zubin and I had found ourselves resting at a diner called “The Crescent Moon” on the outskirts of Apothecaria. It had a colorful neon aesthetic, with red vinyl booths and stools, with accents of pink, white, and blue. The walls covered in the decor of past champions of Apothecaria’s tournaments, as well as a variety of tressym-themed decorations. The place had found itself busy in the recent hours, and for good reason. The waitress and manager of this diner was Mamiko Odoroki, Orihime’s aunt. A large four-armed pink half-dragon that shone as brightly as the sun. She wore cat-eyed glasses and had no sense of immediate apparel preference outside of her waitress attire. Pictures of her niece decorated the left wall in what could be interpreted as an affectionately embarrassing display.

“Just having some friendly talk while I take my night medication,” Yuuki confirmed, her tail swaying at the enjoyment of more company. “What about you?” “Well, after having some microwaved lobster tails, I decided to go for a walk to say goodnight and good show to everyone before I head to sleep.” Orihime smiled, her tail wagging. “You really shouldn’t keep eating cheap food, Orihime. You make enough money now.” Madame Christmas quipped, clearly concerned for the young half-dragon’s well-being. “But I don’t.” Orihime said, “I spent all my savings on my research and my friends.” “Whose fault is that?” Christmas asked, and Orihime sighed. “It’s mine… I know…” She groaned. “Right, now go to bed.” The red dragon-born demanded, shooing her little pink friend away.

“A bheil Corbhais agad?” I asked, unsure of her language preferences. She smiled at me and nodded. “Yes, I speak Corvish. I apologize for my intrusion, and I hope that being undressed around you isn’t discouraged.” She politely declared, taking the plate as it was handed to her. “Traditionally, we satyrs prefer no clothes, and only dress for formalities.” She added. I nodded in understanding and smiled patiently as I sat next to her to enjoy my own meal. “No worries, none at all. I would rather we be allies than potential enemies. To get started, what is your name?” I asked. “Calder. Calder Loughty.” She pronounced, taking a bite of the fernfiddles. “I was a member of the Green Knights.” I had heard that name before, but I admit that I was clueless about who they were. “Was?” I asked, cutting off a piece of owlbear meat and chewing on it. The taste was salty but savory, with a heavy amount of fat.

“What is this, my new friend?” He asked. “It’s a makeshift robe– I worked with what I had, but it should suffice until we get to the next town and afford you some proper clothes.” “With what money?” He questioned, as he looked at me, perplexed and belittled at the sentiment. I smiled as warmly as the lit fire I found myself sitting beside. Zubin sat across from me, looking down at the robe in his hands, his thumbs testing the stitches in the fabric. “I figured I would spend a bit to make sure you had some comfortable clothing. While I have plenty of Notes on my person, I never really had much reason to use them. Being raised in a bar, you learn to live on handouts, so I never had much opportunity to spend it.” I answered, Zubin did not reply, he was too deeply absorbed in the generosity I was presenting him. I cleared my throat, trying to gather what little of his attention remained. “I… Uh… I’ve never been treated so nicely… Why are you doing this to me? What motivates you to give me so much?” He asked, a bit of guilt in his eyes, perhaps from a past I shouldn’t pry.
